POTTSTOWN >> A fire involving machinery inside Dana Corp. caused employees to evacuate Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities responded to Center Avenue and South Street at around 1:40 p.m. after it was reported that a fire had broken out inside one of the buildings at Dana Corp.

“The fire was contained inside the unit and never got out,” explained Goodwill Fire Chief Kevin Yerger. “There were stainless steel shavings burning inside one of the machines.”

Yerger said the company’s own sprinkler system was able to take care of the fire fairly well. After firefighters arrived, the blaze was under control in about 40 minutes.

“Plant personnel and fire brigades pretty much had everything under control from the start. We just arrived on scene and assisted them with getting it under control,” he said.

The machinery reportedly sustained damage but Yerger said the building was not damaged and that the plant will not shut down. Employees were evacuated from the building after being notified of the fire as members of the plant’s fire brigade worked at the scene.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Pottstown Fire Department, Sanatoga Fire Company, Limerick Fire Department and Goodwill Ambulance all responded to the scene.
