PHOENIXVILLE >> As the ultimate source for unconditional love, you know your dog would relish the chance to join in the fight against cancer.

But your furry best friend needs you to take the lead on this one by signing up for the annual Bark for Life of Phoenixville, Sunday, April 9, at Reeves Park, 148 Third Ave.

Registration ($10) is at 1 p.m, with the event kicking off an hour later. All proceeds benefit The American Cancer Society.

Lola, a lovely little Bichpoo (half Bichon frise, half poodle) who is a seasoned four-legged supporter and unofficial mascot for the cause, will be on hand with pet parent, Donna Urie, who runs the noncompetitive walk and canine costume contest that started as a spin-off of the Relay for Life for cancer walk.

“I joined the Relay for Life in honor of my mother, who passed away from cancer, and then decided I wanted to join the Bark for Life in Phoenixville. I love dogs and wanted to see what I could with it here,” noted Urie, who took over the event three years ago.

The walk grows a little bigger each year, she added.

“I would love to see more participation and for us to be as big as the Pottstown Bark for Life. We’re slowly getting there.”

Vendors include Kurt’s Krew; Faith.Hope.Love; Joanie’s Belles; Chester & Montgomery County Pet Search; Hemlock Edge Rescue; Wagsworth Manor; All 4 Paws; Pet Valu Pet Store and Tobias Mobile Vet.

Among the afternoon’s speakers, Dr. Lindsey Schreiber will talk about crossovers between pet and human cancers; Chester & Montgomery County Pet Search will discuss what to do when a pet is lost and will also be chipping pets and checking chips, and Kathy Klosiewicv will chat about transporting animals to their forever homes.

Every dog is encouraged to don their finest costume garb, which could win him or her a basket of treats when the crowd casts votes for the best costume later in the afternoon.
