Birds sign former Penn St. QB McGloin
The Eagles continued to stockpile backup quarterbacks Monday as they agreed to terms on a oneyear deal with Matt McGloin.
McGloin, the NFL walk-on from Penn State, joins Nick Foles, added a few weeks ago to back up quarterback Carson Wentz.
McGloin (6-1, 203) was on the other side of the field, in a reserve role, when Foles tied the singlegame NFL record with seven touchdown passes against the Oakland Raiders during the 2013 season.
The Eagles also announced they’ve hired Paul Lancaster to be their director of player engagement. Judging by the guy’s bio, it could signal the addition of a draft pick or two with off-the-field concerns.
McGloin, 27, lost five of six starts with the Raiders, most of the activity coming in his 2013 undrafted rookie season. The native of West Scranton completed 55.9 percent of his attempts with eight TD passes and eight interceptions.
McGloin threw 46 touchdowns against 19 interceptions in four years at Penn State ending in 2012.
The Eagles say Lancaster will be a mentor and resource for all Eagles players off the field, responsible for “building and maintaining relationships and promoting high standards of professionalism to help ensure success during and beyond their years in the NFL.”
The Eagles certainly could have used him last year when wide receiver Josh Huff was arrested in possession of a weapon and per reports, marijuana; wide receiver Nelson Agholor admitted to being overwhelmed by football; and guard Brandon Brooks came out and said an anxiety disorder had made him too sick to play.
The Eagles benched Agholor for a game. Brooks worked his way through his condition. Huff was released days after his episode. The ensuing distractions didn’t help the Eagles prepare to play football.
Lancaster spent the last 16 years with the Buffalo Bills.
