Borough bubbles with weekend activities
POTTSTOWN >> It’s going to be another one of those weekends in Pottstown when there are so many things going on, it may be hard to decide what to do.
Pow Wow
The Fourth Annual Circle Legacy Center Powwow on Manatawny Creek will be held Saturday and Sunday in Pottstown Memorial Park in Pottstown.
The Medicine Horse Singers and Dancers, MC Barry Lee and Head Dancers Matt White Eagle and Chris Mourning Dove will return and, as in previous years ArtFusion 19464 will be hosting children’s events and the silent auction.
Doors open at 10 a.m. both days and the event goes until 7 p.m. Admission is free, although donations benefitting the legacy center are appreciated.
There is a Grand Entry of dancers at 12 noon each day. Music performances by Spirit Wing and dance exhibitions happen throughout the day.
Native American craft vendors include Indian Fry Bread, Fry Bread Tacos and Wojapi will be prepared by Circle Legacy Center. Events for kids, including story telling and fun Native American games. A silent auction will benefit the Circle Legacy Center.
Colonial May Fair
Pottsgrove Manor, 100 W. King St., will host its annual Colonial Mayfair on Saturday, May from 11 a.m to 5 p.m.
A $2 donation is suggested.
Mayfair is a day of fun-filled activities for all ages. There will be games, music, crafts, and living history demonstrations. Tuckers Tales Puppet Theatre will present interactive puppet shows in addition to providing historic music around the grounds during the event.
Colonial conjurer, Levram the Great, will perform historicallythemed magic shows and entertain visitors with pocket magic tricks throughout the day. Visitors can also have their profile portrait captured by artist Lauren Muney of Silhouettes by Hand while they wait.
As always, visitors are invited to join in and dance around the festive May Pole to help open and close the fair.
In addition to entertainment, a variety of early American crafters and demonstrators will be on hand to display historic skills and trades and sell their wares. Young visitors will have the chance to meet farm animals, play with colonial toys and games, dance around a child-size May Pole, help churn butter, and more.
Pottstown Arts Walk
Following up on the success of the first (snowy) Pottstown ArtsWalk in January, the next installment will be held on Saturday from 12 to 9 p.m.
Eleven organizations, businesses and restaurants in Pottstown come together for a day full of fun and food.
• ArtFusion 19464, 245 E. High St., will be showcasing the Keystone Dreams art show from 12 to 6 p.m. Presented by Philadelphia Creatives for Change, the show will feature work symbolizing a version of the artist’s Pennsylvania, whether a dream, reality, or in between.
• At High Street Music, 135 E. High St., the Craig Clemens Jazz Trio will be performing various swing, funk, blues, and Latin jazz standards from 2 to 4 p.m.. This free event is recommended for all ages.
• At the corner of King and Manatawny streets a community art project will create a “Welcome to Pottstown” sign. They will be priming a giant concrete barrier on the corner of Manatawny and King Streets during the Arts Walk from 2 to 6 p.m.
• At the North Hall Gallery of Montgomery County Community College, 16 High St., student art will be on display from 12 to 6 p.m. Free screening of “Star Wars Rogue One” at 4 p.m. in North Hall Rooms 113-114. Prizes will be awarded to the best Star Wars themed costumes. Concessions are available courtesy of Phi Theta Kappa. Health Science students offering health screenings. Hydroponics exhibit. Pottery wheel exhibit and pottery on display. Stage reading of Star Trek inspired original screen play at 2:30 p.m. in North Hall Room 103; Phi Theta Kappa food sales.
• Steel River Playhouse, 245 High St. will be open from 12 to 6 p.m. and free ukulele lessons will be in the lobby, a display of original artwork, tours of the theater, chaperones views of sitzprobe and rehearsal of upcoming production of The Little Mermaid.
• The Carousel at Pottstown, 30 W. King St., will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. and rides are only $2 or three for $5. The facility also features a restored 1865 horse drawn Trolley snack bar and arcade games. 2 to 4 p.m.
• 107 E. High St. will be host a pop up event for Azie, a new restaurant coming to Pottstown in 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. Guests can sample the work of Azie’s chef Kazuyuki Mitsui and get a taste of things to come. The pre fixe menu is $35 per person and guests are encourage to BYOB.
• Weitzenkorn’s, 145 E. High St. will showcase artwork from two local artists featuring 2-D works that help to bridge the gap between the counter culture and high society from 12 to 4 p.m.
• Smith Family Plaza, 100 E. High St., will play host to the community college celebration of 20 years in Pottstown from 2 to 6 p.m. with local eats, and local live music. As a special treat, “Star Wars Rogue One” screening at will be held at 4 p.m. Come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character for prize.
Nostalgia Night
The Pottstown Classics Car Club will kick off its car show season on Saturday, May 6 at 5 p.m.
As always, registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and the cost will remain the same at $10 per vehicle being displayed. The car show is from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Spectators are free. Rainbow the Clown will again be there to entertain your children with her unique balloon creations. DJ Bruce Garber will be playing your favorite oldies, classic rock along with some new music, just for fun. Food vendors will be available offering a variety of items for the entire family to enjoy.
Sly Fox Goat Races
On Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m., Sly Fox Brewing Co. will host its legendary Bock Fest and Goat Race at its brewery on the Circle of Progress.
This annual rain-or-shine spectacle has been called “Philadelphia’s Best Beer Event” and will feature one of the largest single offerings of bock beers served by any brewery in the United States, including the release of Sly Fox’s seasonal Maibock.
Revelers will be able to enjoy live German Oompah music, great food, and the main event: live goat racing, featuring as many as 60 competitors, with the winner earning the honor of having the year’s festive Maibock named in his or her honor.
In addition, a Jumbotron will take over the lush field neighboring the 30,000-square-foot brewery and broadcast the goat races.
Pennies-a-pound Airplane Rides
Take a ride in an aircraft for just twenty cents per pound (minimum $10
and maximum $30). The Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of The NinetyNines will host their annual Pennies-A-Pound flying event at Pottstown Heritage Airport, 3310 W. Ridge Pike, Pottstown, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Adventurers will get a 20-minute plane ride over Montgomery County in a small aircraft flown by one of the volunteer pilots. The Chapter is proud to continue this
1920s tradition as a way to exemplify the role of women in aviation, instill in passengers an appreciation for the wonders of flight, and demonstrate to the community a respect for working together to further the cause of general aviation. The funds raised are directed towards the chapter’s aviation scholarships offered to women in the Delaware Valley.
