POTTSTOWN » The Pottstown YWCA has a reputation for improving the lives of women, minorities and youth throughout the community.

In recent weeks, that reputation has earned the YWCA a distinguished honor.

The YWCA Tri-County Area in Pottstown was recently selected as a finalist in YWCA’s annual Association Excellence Awards. The nominations for the award are meant to reflect outstanding and lifechanging work and are submitted from YWCA associations throughout the country. Three nominations are then selected in each category as finalists. The entire network of 216 local YWCAs vote for the YWCA whose work they find most outstanding.

“We’re thrilled that our activities to empower women and girls have earned the respect of our YWCA peers,” said Stacey Woodland, Pottstown YWCA’s CEO. “This honor validates the work we do, partnering with the entire community to educate, empower, and advocate.”

Pottstown’s YWCA earned the nomination for its work in increasing programming and advocacy for women and girls. Through its annual Tribute to Exceptional Women and Tribute to Exceptional Girls, the group has helped raise awareness of the accomplishments of women and girls throughout the community. Additionally, the Pottstown YWCA has expanded adult learning services through their Education Center and educated girls about topics related to health through their Healthy Pathways Project.

“YWCA has been empowering women for nearly 160 years, and the work of associations like YWCA Tri-County Area bring that work to life year after year! Congratulations to them on this honor,” said Casey Harden, Interim CEO of YWCA USA.

The YWCA is an organization aimed at “eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all,” according to their national website.

Along with the Pottstown YWCA, finalists in the category of Women’s Empowerment include YWCA Brooklyn and YWCA Silicon Valley. The winner will be announced at YWCA’s Women of Distinction Awards Gala on June 16 in Washington, D.C. during the YWCA national conference.
