Celebrate with return of Mercury Mile walk
Celebrate summer with return of Mercury Mile walk, free Zumba class
POTTSTOWN » It’s officially summer and to celebrate the sunny season, the community is invited to attend two “workout Wednesday” opportunities.
The weekly Mercury Mile walk returns for another year on Wednesday afternoon then the community is invited to dance for fitness with a free Zumba class on Wednesday evening.
The Mercury Mile is a community stroll that’s a way to meet new people and make connections, while getting some steps in at the same time. It began in 2014 to promote walking as a free exercise. Every year, the community activity takes a hiatus during the cold months then returns when temperatures begin to warm up.
Everyone’s invited to the kickoff walk noon Wednesday at the Smith Family Plaza. The plaza is located at 100 E. High St., next to the fountain near Pottstown Borough Hall. Bring along friends, family, coworkers and even pets to the lunchtime stroll. The walk takes about 20 minutes and is a terrific way to get outdoors for some light exercise.
Then later that evening, Fit for Life and the Pottstown YMCA are partnering up to offer the community a free outdoor Zumba class at Memorial Park. Join a Zumba party in the park 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the lawn near the pavilion and splash park. The entrance is located near the intersection of Manatawny and W. 2nd. Streets. Families, adults and children are invited to come out and move it with this free and fun workout.
Former Pottstown High School basketball player and State Champion Howard Brown will host the first Mercury Mile of the year. Brown is the founder of International Ballplayers United (iBall United) and will have a youth sports carnival at Memorial Park from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The free community event is part of the borough’s “GoFourth Festival” activities. Attend Wednesday’s walk to learn more about the recreational event. If there is inclement weather on Wednesday afternoon then this week’s walk will be cancelled. If it rains Wednesday evening, then the outdoor Zumba class will be moved to Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Mercury Mile is a weekly community activity that will happen every Wednesday at noon. The location of the walk changes from week to week and will sometimes be outside of Pottstown. Area organizations and individuals are encouraged to host a Mercury Mile walk to get employees involved and use the activity as an opportunity to inform the community about their company. Organizations that host the mile will be featured in the newspaper through photographs and online for the “Businesses in Motion” section.
Walkers are encouraged to bring business cards and contact information to exchange. The walk is a time when upcoming events, future goals and more can be discussed. Organizations or individuals interested in hosting a Mercury Mile walk should email Michilea Patterson at mpatterson@pottsmerc.com or call 610-850-0282 to schedule a time.
