DUI checkpoint results in multiple arrests

A weekend DUI enforcemen­t by Exeter Township police led to more than a dozen arrests of motorists.

EXETER » Exeter Township Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint over the weekend that resulted in several arrests.

Police said in a release that officers worked overnight on Friday, Aug. 25, to make contact with drivers in an effort to deter intoxicate­d motorists from getting behind the wheel.

Officers made contact with 632 vehicles at the checkpoint, which was set up at 4630 Perkiomen Ave. (Route 422), and distrib-

uted informatio­n to drivers about the dangers of driving intoxicate­d.

Several arrests were

made throughout the course of the night. Of those arrests, six involved DUI charges and 10 involved drug possession charges. In addition, police made three arrests for wanted persons and one arrest for traffic related fraud. Officers also issued 33 traffic citations and 16 warnings.

“The countless other drivers who were made safe through these efforts have made this a very successful checkpoint,” said the Exeter Police Department. “Our increased DUI enforcemen­t efforts will continue through Sept. 10.”

In addition to Exeter Police, other department­s participat­ing in the enforcemen­t included Bern Township Police Department, Muhlenberg Township Police Department, Western Berks Regional Police Department, Northern Berks Regional Police Department, Douglass Township Police Department, Laureldale Police Department and Exeter Fire Police.
