Led by Catania, others with low rounds, Methacton comes away with win over OJR

A meeting of the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s leading boys golf teams saw Methacton place their top five among the first eight finishers to come away with a 185-190 victory over Owen J. Roberts.

Methacton’s Andrew Catania and OJR’s Ward McHenry shared low-man honors in the match at Skippack Golf Club with identical rounds of 34. But while Frankie Guinan (36) and Ryan Glenn (37) were a close second and third in the final order for the ‘Cats, the Warriors got a pair of 37s from A.J. Thomas and John Cooper, followed by Dylan Lasecki’s 38 and Nick Martin’s 39.

Sam Diehl (41) and Conrad Benford (42) completed the Wildcats’ top five. Methacton went to 4-0 while Roberts was dropped to 5-1 and out of its first-place spot in the PAC standings. POPE JOHN PAUL II 191, NORRISTOWN 233 » Though Caleb Ryan scored comfortabl­e low-man honors for the Eagles, the Golden Panthers took five of the next six spots in the final order to claim the PAC victory at Gilbertsvi­lle Golf Club.

Ryan shot a 33 to finish three strokes ahead of PJP co-leaders J.T. Spina and Greg Hiriak. The Panthers followed with solid rounds from David Antoniuk (37), Ethan Slover (40) and Vince Tulli (42) while Norristown, after Josh Ryan’s 39, saw its next three finishers combine for a 161. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 208, BOYERTOWN 236 » Boyertown’s John Engle scored low-man honors with a twoover 38 but it was the Vikings that came away with the victory in league play at Raven’s Claw Par 36 course.

Andrew Giorgi finished with a team-best three-over for PV, which also got a 40 from Christian Riehs and a 41 from Andrew Burkhardt. UPPER PERKIOMEN 224, POTTSGROVE 237 » Upper Perkiomen’s Macauley Swenk earned low-man honors with a five-over 41 as the Indians downed the Falcons in league play.

Brett Miller added a 44 for the victors at the ninehole match at Macoby Run’s Par-36 course. Pottsgrove was led by Cameron Mowery’s 44. PHOENIXVIL­LE 206, UPPER MERION 283 » J.T. Sinnott led the Phantoms’ strong charge at Pickering Valley Golf Club in their PAC match with the Vikings.

Sinnott shot a 40 to secure low-man honors. He was followed by Mitchell Schwartz and Parker Stevens — both with 41s — and the 42s of James Peterson and Drew Gibson. They all finished well ahead of UM low man Nathan Ramanjula, who carded a 53. DANIEL BOONE 14, TWIN VALLEY 10 » Colton Yenser keyed the Blazers’ Berks Conference win over the Raiders in a match at Arrowhead Golf Club.

Yenser’s four-over par 52 helped him score a 2-1 victory in his duel with TV’s Luke Morocko. Ty McKinney accounted for three of Boone’s points, Colin Gabbett (53), Ben Sjosten (55) and Kyle Vonderlind­en also posted 2-1 wins and Evan Pingitore took his pairing 2.5-0.5. HILL SCHOOL 246, SPRINGFORD 248 » Jack Murray was low man for the Blues as they edged the Rams in a non-league match at Brookside Country Club.

Murray shot even-par 36 for the best outing of his career. Billy Gussler followed with a 39 while Hunter Ramee and Echo Wu carded a 39 and 40, respective­ly.

SPRING-FORD 7, POTTSGROVE 0» The Rams used a dominating effort against the Falcons to maintain their unbeaten run atop the PAC.

Spring-Ford (5-0) lost just four games through the lineup, just one in the singles bracket. Tori Alexander (first) and Bianca Caresosa (third) swept their singles matches, with Rachel Reiniger and Hannah Sharkey (third) doing the same in doubles. PHOENIXVIL­LE 6, POPE JOHN PAUL II 1 » A dominating sweep of the singles bracket was key to the Phantoms rolling up a PAC victory over the Golden Panthers.

Julia Gumieniak, Mila Archer and Gina Brown had the perfect play in singles. PJP’s lone point came from its fourth-doubles duo of Kylee Smith and Cristina Pelvo. OWEN J. ROBERTS 5, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2 » A sweep of the doubles bracket paid off big for the Wildcats in their PAC victory over the Vikings.

Chloe Doyle had OJR’s best showing in the team’s lone singles win, taking third singles 6-1, 6-0. PV got its points in the other singles matches, from Jasmine Morris (first) and Nadja Townsend (second). UPPER MERION 5, POTTSTOWN 0 » A clean sweep guided the Vikings past the Trojans in league play. Hali Shin and Minali Tave won their respective singles matches, both in straight sets. PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 5, KIMBERTON 0 » The Panthers dropped just one game through the lineup as they swept past Kimberton in their season-opening match.

Julia Kelly (first) and Sherry Zhang (third) took their singles action in straight sets, as did the first-doubles duo of Tillie Fantacci and Molly Welby. DANIEL BOONE 7, SCHUYLKILL VALLEY 0 » Taylor Ledford’s 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles headed the Blazers’ sweep of Schuylkill Valley.

Boys cross country

BOONE SWEEPS » Zach Murray took overall race honors for the Blazers as they swept their Berks Conference meet with Berks Catholic and Muhlenberg. Boone scored a 15-46 victory over the Saints and a 19-42 win over the Muhls.

Murray covered the course in 18:04, almost a half-minute ahead of Muhlenberg front-runner Johnathan Thrush. Alex Pingitore was third for the Blazers (19:07), followed by Josh Heffner, Adam Davis and Anthony Defusco in the next three spots.

Girls cross country

BOONE SWEEPS » Abby Bulafka headed the Blazers’ sweep of their Berks Conference meet with Berks Catholic and Muhlenberg. Boone won both portions by identical 15-50 scores.

Bulafka checked in with a 22:34, followed by teammates Vivian Kase (23:02) and Carlina Davis (23:09). Maever Picariello, Belle Okkerse, Ashley Benoit, Maggie Nygard, Sierra Rivera, Jocelyn Shank and Noelle Sprenkle got Boone the remaining spots in the Top 10.

POTTSGROVE 3 POTTSTOWN 0» Skylar Glass scored two goals to key the Falcons’ PAC shutout of the Trojans. Glass scored in each half while Pottsgrove also got the benefit of an “own” goal from Pottstown. Becca Delp was credited with an assist on Glass’ second-half tally while Grace Kegel and Summer Walker split time in goal, combining for four saves. ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 4, HILL SCHOOL 3 » The Blues made several runs at Carroll in the course of their non-league game, but they ended up falling shot of their guests.

The Hill answered Carroll’s early score with a tying tally from Susanna Soderman, then forced a 2-2 tie at the end of the first half with another goal from Sydney Jones. With the opportunit­y to take the game back in the second half, Hill instead saw Archbishop Carroll get on the board again, and then answered with strike from Violet Robertson. The visitors scored the game -inning goal from 30 yards out, senior midfielder Grace Gallagher taking a shot that sailed right under the crossbar and over the outstretch­ed hand of goalkeeper Addie Paulson.

Field hockey

METHACTON 3, BOYERTOWN 2» Emily Owens scored two goals - including the gamewinner in overtime - while Olivia Hoover figured in all three tallies by the Warriors in their PAC victory over the Bears. SPRING-FORD 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2 » Clare Kennedy figured in on all the Rams’ goals, including the one that lifted them past the Hawks in overtime of their non-league contest. Kennedy, who scored twice in the first half, assisted on Mary Pat McKenna’s winning tally at 11:59 in OT. Kristen Grebe and Ashley Della Guardia shared goaltendin­g duties, making a respective five and four saves.

Girls volleyball

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 3, RENAISSANC­E AC. 0 » The Panthers won their first league match in three games by sweeping Renaissanc­e Academy by set scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-20.

Bianca Diaz had 10 aces and Miho Suzuki had 13 aces. Frances Del Toro and Bianca Diaz each had three kills, and Cici Chen added another two. METHACTON 3, CONESTOGA 0» Emma Eglinton was the statistica­l leader for the Warriors in their nonleague victory over the Pioneers. Eglinton had 25 assists, four aces, two kills, four digs and one block while Methacton posted set scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-13.
