PHOENIXVILLE » Keyon La-Shawn Carpenter, 21, wanted in the shooting death of a 20-year-old man on Bridge Street Thursday night, was captured in Philadelphia, police announced Friday afternoon.

Carpenter “was taken into custody moments ago with the assistance of Philadelphia Police and a U.S. Marshal team without incident,” according to a 4 p.m. announcement on the Phoenixville Police Facebook page. Carpenter was taken to the Philadelphia Homicide Division at 8th and Race streets for processing.

Police said multiple witnesses identified Carpenter as the shooter Thursday night.

The shooting occurred at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday when an argument between two

people erupted into gunfire in the 200 block of Bridge Street, known as Children’s Plaza, killing Joshua Mitchell, 20, according to Phoenixville Police.

Police believe the two were arguing when Carpenter, a Phoenixville resident, reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired one shot at Mitchell and witnesses. Mitchell attempted to run away and Carpenter reportedly chased after him. After a short chase, Carpenter allegedly shot the Mitchell in the upper body, according to police.

Mitchell was rushed to Phoenixville Hospital, where he later died, according to authorities.

Witnesses told police that Carpenter ran from the scene of the shooting. Police recovered a firearm from the area where the suspect ran, believed to be the gun used in the fatal shooting. The firearm had previously been reported stolen and the serial number on the weapon was partially obliterated, according to police.

Police responded for a report of shots fired on Thursday night in the area of Bank Street and Bridge Street. Upon arrival, officers located a victim with a single gunshot wound.

The shooting occurred in the popular downtown area in Phoenixville, near the historic Colonial Theater which was featured in the 1958 movie “The Blob” and is the scene of an annual Blobfest that attracts thousands of visitors to the borough.
