Conway, Shultz, Spring-Ford boys team shine at Paul Short

Cross Country

The local contingent was led by Owen J. Roberts senior Liam Conway and the Spring-Ford boys’ team on Friday morning at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.

Conway came in third in the boys’ brown race in 15:08, trailing only McDonough School’s Dalton Hengst (14:57) and Neshaminy’s Rusty Kujdych (15:01). The Spring-Ford boys team were champions with 176 points, just ahead of Salesianum School (179). Boyertown came in 4th (249) and Owen J. Roberts 6th (270).

Phoenixvil­le sophomore Carlos Schultz knocked more than 30 seconds off his personal record with a 15:21 finish for an impressive fifth place, the best finish of the day for an underclass­men.

Other top 50 finishers from the area included Spring-Ford’s Jacob McKenna in 19th (15:48), SpringFord’s Zachary Smith in 25th (15:57), Spring-Ford’s John Zawislak in 34th (16:03), Boyertown’s Josh Endy (36th, 16:07), Boyertown’s Christian McCombs (38th, 16:09), Owen J. Roberts’ Andrew Malmstrom (41st, 16:11) and Boyertown’s Dominic Derafelo (47th, 16:13).

In the girls’ brown race, Owen J. Roberts’ Mary Bernotas was the highest finisher from the Pioneer Athletic Conference with an 18:50 for 18th place, just ahead of teammate Autumn Sands in 18:51 (20th). Oley Valley’s Rebecca Snyder placed sixth in 18:18 while Abington Heights’ Katie Dammer won the race in 17:50.

Other top 50 finishers from the PAC were Spring-Ford’s Gabriella Bamford (24th, 18:55), Owen J. Roberts’ Hannah Kopec (37th, 19:19) and OJR’s Alex Glasier (42nd, 19:24).

The OJR girls team placed third with 148 points. Centervill­e was the team winner with 61 points.

Football

Perkiomen School 38, Nativity 35 >> The Panthers made a final defensive stand to hold off Nativity in Pottsville.

Perkiomen led throughout and benefitted from a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Perkiomen School improves to 3-1 following last week’s 47-12 win over George School.

POPE JOHN PAUL II 1, POTTSTOWN 0 » Nina Mariano’s goal at the 29:03 mark of the second half was all the separation the Golden Panthers required in a Pioneer Athletic Conference Frontier Division win over the Trojans Friday afternoon.

Goalie Lillian Stirk made eight saves for Pottstown, which led in corners 6-4. OWEN J. ROBERTS 3, NESHAMINY 1 » The Wildcats made the most of their five total shots with goals from Bridget Guinan (Olivia Leclaire assist), Julia Lamb, and Sarah Garritano in a road win at Neshaminy.

OJR goalie Cassie Micklesava­ge made six saves. Sophia Pello hit the cage for Neshaminy. MUHLENBERG 1, POTTSGROVE 0 » Falcons goalie Tiffany Adedinsewo’s 10 saves kept her team in the game, but Elise Longeneker’s goal (assisted by Cameron Gring) at the 29:33 mark of the second half was the deciding goal in a non-league game. Muhlenberg led in corners 13-4 and shots 10-3.

Boys soccer

METHACTON 3, PENNCREST 1 » The Warriors did all their scoring in the second half with goals from Chris Meehan, Vince Delisi and TJ Taylor for a non-league win.

Trevor Rambo and Delisi set up a goal each while Mason LeSage had five saves. For Penncrest, Matt Arbogast scored in the first half and keeper Kieran Wilmot stopped eight shots.

Girls soccer

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 6, DELCO CHRISTIAN 0 » In a one-sided non-league victory, the Vikings got goals from Sydney Marasco, Allison Cappelli, Maggie Sell, Cassidy Polignano, Jocelyn Moore and Nikki Foller-Moll while assists went to Sarah Westgate, Kelsey Marino, Taylor Reiff, Julia Quinn and Erin Quinn.

Girls tennis

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 5, AIM AC. 0 » The Panthers just missed executing a complete sweep of their non-league match with AIM Academy, dropping just one game through the entire lineup.

Perkiomen’s three singles players — Julia Kelly, Jill Kachmar, Sherry Zhang — won their respective matches by 6-0, 6-0 sets, as did the second doubles tandem of Kristine Rivera and Maki Ashizawa. The Panthers upped their season record to 5-4 with the victory.

Girls volleyball

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 3, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2 » The Vikings dropped a tight-and-can-be five-setter to Rustin, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14. Leading PV were Helena Clauhs’ 16 kills and 15 digs and Jess Oltman’s 9 kills and 5 blocks. Also contributi­ng were Ellie Min with 45 assists, 9 digs, and 4 aces. Liz Caruso had a strong game defensivel­y adding 22 digs. OWEN J. ROBERTS 3, OXFORD 0 » The Wildcats swept 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 in a non-league match. OJR leaders were Michelle Frank (six kills, two blocks, nine digs), Jordyn Chambers (21 assists), Mikayla Johnson (8 kills), and Catherine Cervi (five kills, six blocks).
