Three of four top seeds advance at PAC Doubles tourney; Top seeds retire

Day One of the Pioneer Athletic Conference Doubles Tournament didn’t go entirely as expected on Friday morning. While three of the top four seeded teams advanced to the semifinals, an injury default saw No. 1 seed Tori Alexander and Kathryn Alvarez exit the draw, opening up the field.

No. 2 Dina Nouaime and Tina Prince of Methacton, No. 3 Jasmine Morris and Nadja Townsend and No. 4 Elaina Lee and Jacey Caplan of Owen J. Roberts advanced to Saturday’s semifinals, while No. 8 seed Ari Louer and Karen Li of Methacton were the beneficiar­ies of the Rams’ top duo’s exit as semifinali­sts in the top quarter. Alexander and Alvarez retired down 0-3 in the second round due to an ankle injury to Alvarez.

In the quarters, Methacton’s top team downed Owen J. Roberts’ Erica Gratton and Vidisha Pandey, 6-0, 6-2. Morris and Townsend topped Phoenixvil­le’s Gina Brown and Susan Duncan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Lee and Caplan downed Spring-Ford’s Maddy Morris and Lauren Ostermann, 6-2, 6-1 while Louer and Li dropped Perkiomen Valley’s Angelina Gizzio and Irina Koleva, 6-0, 6-1.

District qualifiers were establishe­d in the day’s action with the semifinali­sts all qualifying for the Disrtict 1-AAA field. In Class AA, the PAC will be represente­d by Pottstown’s Gianna Epps and Sierra Everett and Upper Perkiomen’s Maddy Gochnauer and Gail Kooser.

The tournament continues Saturday at 9 p.m. back at Perkiomen Valley.

Girls volleyball

METHACTON 3, BOYERTOWN 1» After dropping the opening set, the Warriors claimed the final three sets en route to a PAC win over the Bears.

Boyertown won the opening set 25-20 before Methacton rattled off the next three by scores of 26-24, 2519 and 25-10. Andrea Castaneda had nine digs, eight kills and a pair of aces while Carli Ginther had 26 digs and two aces. Emma Eglinton had 32 assists, five digs, a pair of blocks and an ace while Hannah O’Donnell had 11 digs, a pair of aces and two kills. PHOENIXVIL­LE 3, OWEN J. ROBERTS 2 » The Phantoms edged the Wildcats in a fiveset battle, 21-25, 26-24, 2125, 25-20, 15-7, in PAC play.

Leading Phoenixvil­le were Keara Hennessey (3 aces, 27 assists, 15 digs), Romina Broglia (4 aces, 5 kills, 11 digs), Kayla Grammersto­rf (13 kills, 7 blocks, 4 digs), Alex Poloway (4 kills, 10 digs) and Maple Maloney (28 digs).

Leading OJR were Michelle Frank (four aces, 11 kills, two blocks, 11 digs), Chloe Golas (8 kills, four digs) and Mikayla Johnson (six kills, seven digs). SPRING-FORD 3, GREAT VALLEY1» The Rams emerged victorious in their last regular season game in four sets, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22.

Spring-Ford (13-5), which faces Upper Merion in the PAC semifinals Monday night at Pope John Paul II, was led by Olivia Olsen (13 kills, 9 digs), Carly Swenson (37 assists, 5 digs), Alexis Palucki (13 kills, 3 blocks), Grace Kraft (24 digs, 4 aces).

Girls soccer

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 3, POTTSGROVE 0 » Junior Sydney Marasco found the net three times to lead the Vikings to a non-league win between PAC opponents.

Marasco opened the scoring unassisted in the seventh minute before striking twice in the second half on assists from Sarah Westgate, Jocelyn Moore and Nikki Foller-Moll.

Field hockey

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 4, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3 OT » Taylor Hamm capped the Vikings’ comeback with the game-tying and game-winning goals, her tally at 8:55 of overtime giving PV (12-6) a non-league win in its regular season finale.

Hamm forced overtime by leveling the game with 4:01 to play before winning it on an assist from Katie Wuerstle. Hamm also assisted Danielle Hamm on PV’s opening goal, which came in the second half after trailing 1-0 at the break. Gabby Martina also scored for PV while Henderson’s Alexa Dunleavy scored twice.
