PHILADELPHIA » Bryant Shirreffs threw for three touchdowns, Tyler Cole had a pick-six, and Connecticut held off Temple 28-24 on Saturday to end an eight-game skid in conference play.

The Huskies (2-4, 1-3 American Athletic Conference) defense forced two turnovers and stopped Temple on downs three times, including the Owls’ final drive, which ended in an incomplete Hail Mary pass with seconds left.

Temple (3-4, 1-3), which converted a fumble and an interception into scores, rallied in the fourth, but settled for a field goal with 11:14 left after being stopped on the 6.

Logan Marchi threw for 356 yards on 54 attempts and Temple outgained Connecticut 473 yards to 244. COLUMBIA 34, PENN 31 » Josh Wainwright caught 10 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, including a 24-yarder from Anders Hill in overtime, and Columbia (5-0, 2-0 Ivy League) defeated Penn (2-3, 0-2) for its best start since 1996.

The Lions knocked off the defending Ivy League champions for the first time in 21 tries and snapped an 11-game home skid against the Quakers.

Penn appeared in control after Nick Miller’s 25-yard interception return gave the Quakers a 21-7 lead in the third quarter, but the Lions rallied for three TDs.

The Quakers sent the game to overtime on Will Fischer-Colbrie’s 17-yard scoring strike to Justin Watson with 1:21 left. Penn got the ball first in OT, but settled for a 41-yard field goal.
