Car crashes into tree, killing the driver

Police added that although the crash is still under investigat­ion, preliminar­y findings indicate that excessive speed was the primary factor.

Police believe excessive speed on a windy road caused a onevehicle crash that killed an East Greenville man.

CUMRU TWP. » A Montgomery County man was killed and his passenger seriously injured following a one-vehicle crash on Route 724 Tuesday night.

The victim, Matthew Schultz, 24, of East Greenville, was driving when the accident occurred around 10:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of Route 724 near Valley Stream Road, according to authoritie­s. The crash occurred as Schultz was travelling eastbound on Route 724 in a 2015 Nissan Sentra and failed to negotiate a left curve, police said. The vehicle then crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and slammed into a tree head on, according to police.

Schultz and a passenger, Cassandra Lee Rambo, 22, of Pottstown, were extricated from the vehicle by first responders and taken to the hospital, police said. Schultz was pronounced dead at Reading Hospital shortly after arrival. Rambo suffered severe injuries and was admitted for treatment, according to police.

Schultz died of multiple injuries to the head, neck and lower limbs, according to reports.

Cumru Township Police said in a press release Wednesday that air bags were deployed during the crash but neither individual had been wearing a seat belt. Police added that although the crash is still under investigat­ion, preliminar­y findings indicate that excessive speed was the primary factor.

Route 724 between Route 10 and Valley Stream Road remained closed until around 2 a.m. Wednesday as authoritie­s cleared the scene.
