Redskins will have new kicker on Monday night

-

ASHBURN, VA. » The Washington Redskins have put kicker Dustin Hopkins on injured reserve with a strained hip muscle and signed free agent Nick Rose to replace him.

Rose’s NFL debut will come Monday night in Washington’s game at the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles.

He played college football at Texas, finishing his career there in 2015. He made 27 of 38 field goals and 71 of 74 extra points for the Longhorns.

Rose has been with the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers but did not make a regular-season roster with either club.

Hopkins missed an extra-point attempt during Washington’s 26-24 victory over the 49ers on Sunday. He is 12 of 13 on PATs and 9 of 11 on field-goal tries this season. Both missed field goals were from beyond 50 yards.

Colts keep Luck out of practice

INDIANAPOLIS » Andrew Luck has stopped throwing passes for now, and it’s not yet clear when he’ll resume.

On Wednesday, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard said the team has instructed the star quarterback to take a break from throwing after developing soreness in his surgically repaired throwing shoulder.

“The doctors and the trainers have decided — they’ve given him a cortisone shot to kind of take away some of that inflammation that’s been happening,” Ballard said. “In terms of the rehab, it’s been going well.”

Ballard explained some soreness was expected as Luck continued to work his way back from a partially torn labrum.
