Master prints from the Goebel Collection at MCCC
Montgomery County Community College will be hosting the first major exhibition of a special print collection on loan from Eastern University in Wayne, that highlights 500 years of printmaking by master artists.
The exhibit, “Master Prints from the Goebel Collection,” opens Oct. 25 at the College’s Fine Arts Center Gallery on its Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Whitpain, with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the community.
The 63 prints on display are part of a collection of 1,300 prints donated to Eastern University by a New York attorney, Harry C. Goebel, in the 1960s. The prints represent a range of printmaking styles, techniques and artists from the early 16th century through the mid-20th century. The earliest selection on display is a woodcut by German polymath Albrecht Dürer from 1509, while one of the latest prints is a linoleum block print by Richard Smith from 1966.
The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 6. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekend group tours are available by appointment by contacting Patrick Rodgers at prodgers@mc3.edu or 215-619-7349. The tours are free, take approximately an hour and provide a greater insight into individual artists, styles and movements featured in the exhibition.
