Tornetta tears it up for Mules
KELLY TORNETTA (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » Kelly Tornetta had a big season on the court and in the class room for the Muhlenberg women’s volleyball team.
The junior from Phoenixville was named to the Centennial Conference first team for the second straight year and she followed that up by being named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-North Region first team. And last week, the 5-foot-8 outside hitter was named an AVCA Division III All-American honorable mention and was also named to the CoSIDA Division III District 4 All-Academic team. A double major in physics and mathematics, she will now be considered for Academic AllAmerican.
“Kelly is an amazing athlete and over the last several years has really grown in her game,” coach Alexa Keckler said. “She has worked hard in the off-season to be physically and mentally prepared to be a leader and be a go-to player on the court.”
Tornetta led the 24-6 Mules in kills with 376 and points with 426.0. She had an outstanding .249 attack percentage with 260 digs, 36 service aces and 24.0 total blocks. She had 12 double-doubles during the season and had a team-high 17 kills in a 3-1 loss to Swarthmore in the league semifinals on Nov. 4 in Baltimore, Md.
“Kelly is deserving of all of her accolades,” Keckler said. “She is an exceptional young woman with a desire to be successful in the classroom and on the court.” STEPHEN STURM (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The true freshman quarterback tossed four touchdown passes including a 50-yarder with
1:34 left in the game to give the Bentley football team a come-from-behind 35-31 upset victory over previously unbeaten Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Nov. 11 in Worcester, Mass. Assumption had entered the game 9-0 and ranked eighth in Division II.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Sturm connected on 14 of 21 passes for 385 yards and had TD tosses of 2, 60 and 63 yards to go along with the big 50-yarder. In seven games, he connected on 95 of 130 passes for 1,375 yards and 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions. The Falcons finished the season with a 6-4 record. JACKIE LERRO (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The 5-foot freshman was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and was selected to the first team after a standout season with the Lynchburg field hockey team. Lerro started all 20 games and had 28 goals and three assists for 59 points. The Hornets finished 16-4 and Lerro had the gamewinning goal in nine of the victories. The season ended on a sour note when Lynchburg dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Washington & Lee in the league title game on Nov. 4 in Lexington, Va. ERIN TENNENY (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The junior had a solid season in goal for the Jefferson women’s soccer team, the Rams finishing 9-9 after dropping a 2-1 decision to Goldey-Beacom in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals on Oct. 31 in Wilmington, Del. Tenneny had 10 saves in the game and finished 9-8 on the season. She gave up 21 goals (1.25 goals against average) and had 67 saves (.761 save percentage) with five shutouts. SHAE DUKA (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » The 5-foot-7 junior defender was named to the Landmark Conference second team for her play with the stingy Moravian women’s soccer team. Duka chipped in with an assist but her forte and that of the team is denying goals. The team finished 9-6-1 and had 10 shutouts. The Pride gave up just six goals and they all came in the losses and all by the score of 1-0 including a shutout loss to Susquehanna in the final game of the season on Oct. 28. The team’s goals against average (.364) stands ninth best in Division III. MEGAN CLERICO (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The junior earned honorable mention honors on the Mountain East Conference All-Star team after a solid season playing with the Fairmont State women’s volleyball team. The 5-foot-5 libero led the team with 610 digs (26th in Division II). She also had 93 assists and 21 service aces. She had a season-high 38 digs in a 3-1 loss to Shepherd on Nov. 7. The Fighting Falcons finished 21-11 overall after dropping a 3-0 decision to Urbana in the first round of the league playoffs last Thursday. BRANDT BECK (THE HILL SCHOOL) » The senior linebacker was named to the Liberty League first team for his play with the Rensselaer Poly football team, the Engineers earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament after a 20-14 victory over rival Union on Nov. 11 in Schenectady, N.Y. Beck, from Mohnton, had 64 tackles, including 5.5 for losses of 26 yards, two sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles. RPI takes an 8-2 overall record and a 4-1 league mark into the NCAAs. SABRINA ROBERTO (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The freshman took over in goal early in the season for the Widener field hockey team and went on to earn MAC Commonwealth second-team honors. The Pride was 12-7 and Roberto was 10-5, her victories tying the best total since the 2010 season. She gave up 18 goals (1.28 goals against average) and thanks to a solid defense had to make just 25 saves. She had five shutouts. Widener saw its season end with a three overtime 1-0 loss to FDU Florham in the ECAC semifinals on Nov. 11 in Reading. SIMONE STEWART (SPRINGFORD) » The Clark Summit women’s soccer team suffered through a 1-17 season with a 0-10 mark in the Colonial States Athletic Conference but the 4-foot-11 freshman had a big season for the Defenders. Stewart had a team-high 37 points on 12 goals and three assists. The points were ninth and the goals eighth in the CSAC. Stewart led the Defenders in their only victory with two goals and two assists in a 10-0 triumph over Central Penn on Oct. 5. KELLY O’BRIEN (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The senior was the “super sub” on the Lafayette women’s soccer team. O’Brien played in 16 games with just one start in goal behind a freshman. Playing mostly in the second half, she had a 4-4-2 record, the Leopards finishing 5-9-2 overall and 3-5-1 in Patriot League play after a 1-0 loss to Boston University in the first round of the league tournament on Oct. 31. O’Brien played the second half and gave up the winning goal. She gave up 15 goals (1.78 goals against average) with 61 saves (.792 save percentage). MYAH CORDREY (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The 5-foot-10 middle hitter had a solid freshman season with the Marymount women’s volleyball team. She led the Saints in total blocks with 65 and had 193 kills, 57 digs and 13 service aces playing in all 31 matches and 110 of 113 sets. Marymount finished 16-15 on the season after losing 3-2 to Westminster in the ECAC semifinals on Nov. 12 in Frostburg, Md. Cordrey had a season-high 13 kills in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over top-seed Arcadia in the quarterfinals on Nov. 11 also in Frostburg.
