Turkey Trot supports cancer research
DOWNINGTOWN » The Chester County Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning has become an annual tradition for people to come together, visit with old friends, and even burn a few calories in anticipation of the day’s feast.
The Chester County Turkey Trot takes place Thanksgiving morning starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday at Downingtown High School West. It is a 5K Run/ Walk, 2K Walk or Kids’ Run.
This seasonal event has been helping in the fight against childhood cancer since 2012. The Cure4Cam Childhood Cancer Foundation, with its mission to raise community awareness about childhood cancer, as well as funds to support the development of less toxic treatments for childhood cancer patients, is a beneficiary of the yearly event. More than $230,000 has been raised by this race to date to help fund valuable childhood cancer research.
Cameron Evans, the 14-year-old Downingtown runner who lost his life to leukemia five years ago and for whom Cure4Cam is named, said wisely, “Don’t run from something, run for something.” Following his lead, for this year’s Chester County Turkey Trot, Cure4Cam is introducing yellow memory/honor ribbons that participants as well as spectators may purchase to wear in honor or memory of someone who has been an inspiration in their life.
In addition to benefitting the Downingtown West cross-country team, all sponsorships and donations as well as part of the proceeds go to Cure4Cam to help fund childhood cancer research. Ribbons will be available for sale at packet pick-up on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, and again on Thanksgiving morning at the Cure4Cam tent.
