Stabbing suspect nabbed at border

PHOENIXVIL­LE » A man police say was responsibl­e for the brutal stabbing of a woman in Phoenixvil­le was apprehende­d by border patrol agents attempting to flee to Mexico.

Francisco Hernandez, 32, of Warminster, was arrested Monday after police say he was located at the U.S. border, attempting to enter into Mexico.

At 6 a.m. Monday, U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehende­d Hernandez at the border crossing in Brownsvill­e, Texas. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations officers said in a release Monday that “officers at midbridge received from Mexican immigratio­n officials a male pedestrian from Guatemala that lacked entry documents to traverse Mexico. Officers referred the man for secondary inspection to confirm his identity and citizenshi­p.”

Once officers conducted a fingerprin­t check, they verified the identity of the man as 32-year-old Leovigildo Alvarado Castanon,

AKA Francisco Hernandez, a citizen of Guatemala, wanted in Phoenixvil­le on an outstandin­g five-count warrant.

Hernandez was turned over to the Cameron County, Texas, Sheriff’s Department to await extraditio­n back to Chester County.

“Our frontline officers maintain strict vigilance while conducting their inspection­al duties and that dedication and attention to detail resulted in the apprehensi­on of a man wanted for attempted homicide in Pennsylvan­ia,” said Port Director Petra Horne, Brownsvill­e Port of Entry in the release.

Hernandez was wanted by Phoenixvil­le Police for the Nov. 8 stabbing that occurred at 7 p.m. at the intersecti­on of Main and Morgan streets. When they arrived, officers found a 36-year-old female with multiple stab wounds to her torso and extremitie­s. Police determined she was stabbed while seated inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the First Presbyteri­an Church, located on Main Street, between Washington Avenue and Morgan street.

Police also recovered the weapon at the scene.

The victim underwent emergency surgery at Paoli Hospital.

Police have not identified a possible motive for the incident.

Hernandez is being charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangerin­g another person and possession of a weapon.
