Lafayette getting a lift from Jaworski

The Lafayette men’s basketball team is off to a slow start but the Leopards are getting solid play from freshman Justin Jaworski.

The 6-foot-1, 188-pound guard, a former Perkiomen Valley standout, is second on the team in scoring with a 13.7 average. He also has 15 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Jaworski, who missed the team’s first two games recovering from an ankle injury, really came up big in a 68-67 loss to Drexel on Nov. 24 and a 79-58 victory over Quinnipiac on Dec. 1. He had a college career-high 24 points against Drexel, hitting 9-of-14 shots from the field, and had 19 points against Quinnipiac, hitting 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range and he was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Those performanc­es earned him Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 4.

“Justin has been a constant since arriving on campus,” coach Fran O’Hanlon said. “He is consistent­ly working to improve. He plays both ends of the court and brings great toughness to our squad.”

Jaworski played four years and started the last three in basketball and three years of football at Perkiomen Valley. In basketball, he was a three year captain and a three year All-League pick and averaged 22.2 points a game to lead the Vikings to the league title his senior season.

Lafayette (1-8) opens league play against rival Lehigh on Friday, Dec. 29 in Easton. MARK FORREST (THE HILL SCHOOL) » The Lehigh junior standout was named to the United States Soccer Coaches Associatio­n All-American third team on Dec. 7. He’s just the second Mountain Hawk in program history to be a first team All-Patriot League pick, a Patriot major award winner (Offensive Player of the Year), a first team All-Region selection and an All-American in the same season. Forrest, from Douglassvi­lle, tied for second in Division I in points (38) and was tied for third in goals (15). His 2.00 points per game was second and his 0.79 goals a game was fifth. Lehigh finished 11-7-1. JORDAN WOOD (BOYERTOWN) » The sophomore with freshman eligibilit­y is 6-3 overall and 4-2 in dual matches at 285 pounds with the No. 5-ranked Lehigh wrestling team which is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in Eastern Intercolle­giate Wrestling Associatio­n matches after beating Penn 41-6 and Drexel 21-20 on Dec. 10 in Philadelph­ia. Wood won his match against Penn with a pin in 2:45 and picked up a 5-1 decision against Drexel. He went 11-3 competing unattached in open tourneys for the Mountain Hawks last season. ABBY KAPP (BOYERTOWN) » The 6-foot freshman guard started the first five games but is now coming off the bench as a key reserve for the Bucknell women’s basketball team, the Bison 6-3 in non-league play to start the season after a 60-53 triumph over Iona on Dec. 3

in New Rochelle, N.Y. It was the team’s fourth straight victory after a 2-3 start. Kapp is averaging 2.3 points and 2.0 rebounds a game and has eight assists and seven steals. SAM LAVRICH (METHACTON) » The Wagner senior was named Northeast Conference Diver of the Week on Dec. 5 after her performanc­e with the women’s swim team in the ECAC Winter Championsh­ips Dec. 1-3 in East Meadow, N.Y. Lavrich finished fourth in the 3-meter with a score of 228.20 and then set a Seahawk record when she finished seventh in the 1-meter dive with a score of 194.80. Lavrich earned NEC Diver of the Week honors after the same meet last season. PAYTON MILES (THE HILL SCHOOL) » The Lehigh sophomore made her first appearance in the U.S. Winter Nationals on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Columbus, Oh. The reigning Patriot League 50 freestyle champion competed in that event and posted a season personal best time of 23.48 in the preliminar­ies but it fall 0.31 short of earning a spot in one of the three final heats. Miles, from Limerick, was one of just two Lehigh swimmers competing in the prestigiou­s meet. JOSH TUPPER (SPRING-FORD) » The senior kicked off the season with the Widener men’s indoor track team at the Holiday Meet on Dec. 9 in Haverford. He competed in just one event, the 400 meter dash, and he finished first out of 10 sprinters with a time of 50.19. Tupper is the defending Middle Atlantic Conference Champion and posted a time of 49.15 to win it. He went on to compete in the NCAA Division III Championsh­ip and finished 14th with a time of 51.61. BAILEY QUINN (PHOENIXVIL­LE) » The East Stroudsbur­g junior forward was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division II AllAmerica­n second team on Dec. 11. Quinn led the 17-5 Warriors with 13 goals and added an assist for 27 points. A transfer from Division I Old Dominion, she had three goals in a 4-0 victory over Seton Hill and the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory over Bloomsburg. She scored the team’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to eventual champion Shippensbu­rg in the Division II semifinals on Nov. 17. KELLY TORNETTA (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The Muhlenberg junior women’s volleyball standout was named to the CoSIDA Division III All-American Academic squad it was announced on Dec. 13. She’s a double major in physics and mathematic­s. On the court, Tornetta

led the Mules to a 24-6 record. She had a team-high 376 kills, a team-high 36 service aces and a team-high 426.0 points. She was also third in digs with 266, had 24 total blocks and a .249 attack percentage. She’ll spend the next semester studying in New Zealand. AUSTIN DEANGELO (METHACTON) » The sophomore helped the Monmouth men’s swim team finish fifth out of 13 teams at the ECAC Winter Championsh­ips on Dec. 1-3 in East Meadow, N.Y. DeAngelo swam the second legs on the 200 medley relay which finished third with a time of 1:37.43 and the 400 medley relay which also finished third with a time of 3:34.61. He also finished fourth in the 100 breaststro­ke in 58.47 and seventh in the 200 breaststro­ke in 2:12.71. And he scored points for finishing 23rd in the 200 IM in 2:02.92. DARBY BAUER (BOYERTOWN) » The 5-foot-10, 245-pound sophomore kicked off his season with the Goucher men’s indoor track team by competing in Susquehann­a’s River Hawk Open on Dec. 1 in Selinsgrov­e. Bauer finished sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 39 feet, 7 ¾ inches. It was a personal best for him and the fourth best performanc­e in the Gophers’ indoor program history. He also competed in the shot put and finished 13th with a throw of 36 feet, 5 ¾ inches. BRYCE REDDINGTON (METHACTON) » The true freshman is competing at 149 and 157 pounds for the George Mason wrestling team. He has an 8-7 record with five pins and a technical fall. Reddington has the best record of four wrestlers in the 141 weight class but redshirt sophomore Matthew Raines, who is 5-6, is starting most of the dual matches for the Patriots. And, Reddington is wrestling behind redshirt freshman Creed Lumpp at 157 pounds. George Mason will compete in the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanoog­a, Tenn. MIKEY PRIOR (POTTSGROVE) » The 5-foot-10 freshman had a solid meet for the Ursinus men’s swim team at the four-team Golden Bears Classic Dec. 8-9 in West Chester. Prior finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 53.21 and was fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.26. He also finished sixth in the 200 IM in 1:58.46. Prior swam the leadoff leg on both the 200 and 400 medley relays, the 200 finishing fourth with a time of 1:37.98 and the 400 finishing fifth with a time of 333.53.
