Diaz’s late surge powers Spring-Ford to 63-58 win at San Diego Tournament

Nestor Diaz’s power down the stretch proved big for the Spring-Ford boys basketball team Wednesday.

Diaz poured on 15 fourthquar­ter points to key the Rams’ 63-58 victory over Lake Stevens (Wash.) in the San Diego Surf & Slam Tournament. He finished with a game-high 24 points for the Rams.

Noah Baker added 14 as Spring-Ford used a 30-25 second-half advantage to break open the 33-all stalwart at the half. NORTH PENN 42, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 41 » The Vikings had the upper hand on the Knights in the early going, but the visitors rallied in the second half to come away victorious in their opening-round game from the Perkiomen Valley Tournament.

Zach Krause scored 10 points to head PV, which led by a 23-20 count at the half. Tyler Strechay and Bryce Streeper each kicked in an additional eight for the Vikes. WISSAHICKO­N 65, METHACTON 57 » Four players scored in double-digits to lead the Trojans past the Warriors during the opening round of the Perkiomen Valley Tournament.

Max Rapaport led Wissahicko­n with 20 points while Zach Reiner followed with 15 along with Anthony Lawrence (11) and Eddie Fortescue (10). Wissahicko­n held a 31-27 lead at the half. David Duda led the way for Methacton with 23 points while Jeff Woodward added 18 on 9-of-10 shooting. STATE COLLEGE 83, OWEN J. ROBERTS 62 » With a 49-33 scoring edge in the middle quarters, State College expanded its early lead over the Wildcats on the way to victory in this non-conference matchup.

Roberts had a trio of double-figure scorers, led by Sa’Vaughn Davidheise­r’s 15-point outing. Shyheed May chipped in with 13 points, and Nick Massa with 12. UPPER PERKIOMEN 73, PEQUEA VALLEY 36 » Ryan Kendra hit for a game-high 21 points, leading a trio of double-figure scorers that keyed the Indians’ romp over Pequea Valley.

Will Walker and Sean Boyle each chipped in with 10 points as UP expanded its initial 18-9 lead with a 37-15 scoring edge in the middle frames. UPPER DARBY 57, POTTSGROVE 45 » Justin Robinson scored a team-high 12 points as the Falcons fell to Upper Darby during the West Chester Rustin Classic.

Jayden Blakey added 10 points for Pottsgrove, which was outscored 36-20 during the second half.

Girls basketball

OCEAN CITY 46, METHACTON 40» The Warriors fell to Ocean City during the championsh­ip game of the Wildwood Boardwalk Classic.

Abby Penjuke tied a game-high with 18 points on four 3-pointers while Nicole Cooper added eight points. Methacton trailed 24-23 at the half but was outscored 22-17 the rest of the way. Danielle Donoghue paced Ocean City with 18 points. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 54, OLNEY CHARTER 21 » The Vikings held the opposition scoreless in two quarters on the way to a win during the Ridley Tournament.

Megan Jonassen and Taylor Hamm figured in with a respective 17 and 12 points apiece while Sara Nijssen added eight as PV jumped out to a 31-15 lead by the half and extended it to 4215 by the end of the third quarter. WYOMISSING 66, POTTSTOWN 37 » Leah McAvoy scored 22 points, 18 of those in the first half, to lead the Spartans (7-1) over the Trojans (5-4) in the Wyomissing Tournament.

Ebony Reddick scored a game-high 23 points for Pottstown, compiling a double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds. The Trojans will now face Exeter in Thursday’s 1 p.m. consolatio­n game. SPRING-FORD 40, SOUDERTON 38 » The Rams held on despite a late charge from Kate Connolly and the Indians on the way to a win during the Penncrest Tournament.

Connolly finished with a game-high 22 points as Souderton used a 13-5 advantage in the fourth quarter to make it a close finish. Lucy Olsen paced SpringFord (5-0 overall) with a team-high nine points while Abby Goodrich added eight. UPPER PERKIOMEN 47, OCTORARA 26 » Bolstered by the play of Most Valuable Player Kaitlyn Mundy, the Indians rolled up a victory on the host Braves in the Octorara Tournament’s championsh­ip game.

Indoor track

BURDETTE INVITATION­AL » Melissa Israel and John Zawlislak had Spring-Ford’s highest individual finishes in the Robert Burdette Indoor Classic at Lehigh University.

Israel placed third in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, and Zawislak also went third in the mile with a 4:40.03 clocking. The boys’ distance medley foursome of Zach Smith, Stephen Chapman, Milan Sharma and Jacob McKenna finished second in a time 10:46.18, ranking fourth in the nation at this point in the season.

Other high finishers for the Rams in a field of 34 girls and 43 boys teams were the girls’ 4x800 relay of Julia Vledder, Brooke Donahue, Rachel Muphy and Rachel Moyer, fifth in 10:41.72; , Jordan Sigler, sixth in the 60 hurdles (10.06) and Brigitte Smith, sixth in the shot put (31-5 1/2).
