POTTSTOWN » Days before the 10th Annual Polar Bear Swim, Pottstown has opted to postpone the event for safety purposes.

The borough announced Friday that because of a Code Blue notice issued by Montgomery County, the annual event has been postponed. The postponement was authorized by Pottstown Parks and Recreation Director Michael Lenhart.

“Unfortunately, with today’s issuance of a county-wide Code Blue in effect through Tuesday, January 2nd, and the most recent survey of conditions at Riverfront Park, which indicate a dual layer of ice completely covering the wading area, we must cancel the New Year’s Day Events, including the bonfire and Polar Bear Swim. Our apologies for the letdown, but the safety of participants must come first,” read an update on the event’s Facebook page.

The borough encouraged eager participants to stay tuned to the Pottstown Borough Parks and Recreation Department Facebook page for updates on a rescheduling date for the plunge and bonfire

events. An extension of the Code

Blue for Montgomery County was issued Friday by Montgomery County Commissioners. The extension has been issued through 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018.

During this time, nighttime temperatures and/or wind chills are expected to be at or below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The Code Blue was declared Monday, Dec. 25, and was set to expire at 10 a.m. Friday.
