Get involved in a day of service to honor MLK
There are plenty of opportunities on Monday to give back to the community in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
As the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and the ensuing holiday approach, a number of area events to mark the occasion are in the works.
• On Sunday, Jan. 14, area religious groups have once again organized an all-faith celebration at The Hill School.
This year, it will be held in the school’s alumni chapel and begins at 4 p.m.
Local business, political, education and community leaders are invited to attend and refreshments will be served immediately after the service.
• In Ian’s Boots, the non-profit group that provides shoes and footwear to needy families, will hold a “Weekend of Service” in recognition of King’s birth on Saturday, Jan. 13 and Sunday, Jan. 14., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
It will take place at 1486 S. Hanover St. (Route 100, behind Diane’s Discount Pets) in North Coventry.
“We will be sorting, cleaning, tagging and putting shoes in stock. Best thing this year ... we are in our new location with heat!,” according to the group’s flier. Call 610-9708820 for more information.
• For the fourth year, state Rep. Warren Kampf, R-157th Dist., has also arranged for several “days of service” opportunities in recognition of King’s contributions on Monday, Jan. 15.
