Mertie B. Schwenk, 94, of Pottstown

Mertie B. Schwenk, 94, of Pottstown, PA passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Berkshire Center in Reading, PA.

Born in Pottstown, PA on September 21, 1923, Mertie was the daughter of the late John and Caroline (Shappell) Schwenk.

Mertie graduated from Pottstown High School in 1941 and Pottstown Hospital School of Nursing, where she later taught. She was a registered nurse for over 40 years and during that time was head of the OR for Pottstown Hospital. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake and share her goodies with co-workers, doctors, and her family. Mertie was admired and respected by many people.

The family would like to thank the staff at Chesnut Knoll, Caring Hospice, and Berkshire Center for the excellent care Mertie received.

She is survived by five nieces, Barbara Metz, Bertine Angstadt, Bernetta Hartline, Beryl Kelly, and Madeline Cameron; one nephew, John Schwenk; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by one sister, Loranda Mest; one brother, John Schwenk; and two nieces, Beverly Smith and Brenda Dolla.

A viewing will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 1-2 p.m. at the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, Inc., 955 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, PA 19464. A Funeral Service will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will take place after the service at Highland Memorial Park.
