WOMAN, 81, DIES IN RT. 100 CRASH
Vehicle crashes through guardrail, ends up at bottom of steep ravine
UPPER POTTSGROVE » One person was killed and another seriously injured when a minivan flipped into a ravine off Route 100, officials said.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed Thursday that an accident on Route 100 Wednesday afternoon resulted in the death of 81-year-old Roseann Waterworth of Reading. An autopsy revealed that her cause of death was “multiple injuries,” according to the coroner.
In a press release Thursday, Upper Pottsgrove Police said they responded to the accident at around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday on Route 100 south near Farmington Avenue.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota minivan, operated by an 80-year-old man who has not been identified by police, had been travelling south on Route 100. Police said they believe the driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and rolling down an embankment where it eventually came to a rest. The 81-year-old female passenger,
identified by the coroner as Waterworth, was ejected from the vehicle and later succumbed to her injuries, police said.
The driver was transported by Goodwill Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital.
Two medical helicopters were also called to the scene.
Route 100 southbound and the Route 100 northbound ramp remained closed for several hours as first responders worked at the scene of the accident. BerksMont Towing later used a crane to remove the vehicle from the ravine.
In addition to Upper Pottsgrove Police, Douglass Township (Mont.) Police and West Pottsgrove Police assisted on the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash and are asking that anyone with information contact Upper Pottsgrove Police Department at 610-326-8446.
