Schreiber steps up for York swimming

Morgan Schreiber kicked off the second half of the season with the York men’s swim team with a big effort in a 151-103 victory over Randolph-Macon on Jan. 13 in York.

Schreiber, from Pottstown (Pottsgrove), won the 100 backstroke in 54.45 and the 200 backstroke in 2:00.27. He also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay in 1:39.52. On Jan. 20, in a 19270 victory over Frostburg, also in York, Schreiber won the 500 freestyle (4:59.71), finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.15) and second with the A squad to the Spartans B squad in the 400 medley relay in 3:43.04.

“Morgan is having a very good senior year,” coach Greg Doyle said. “He started off a little slow but has been training very hard as he prepares for the conference championsh­ips and beyond.”

The coach said that Schreiber has some lofty goals for the end of the season.

“Morgan is working hard to achieve those goals and I’m excited to see what he can go as we get to the end of the season,” Doyle said.

The Capital Athletic Conference championsh­ip is set for Feb. 23-25 in St. Mary’s City, Md. Schreiber will be shooting for his fourth straight title in the 100 backstroke and his third straight crown in the 200 backstroke.

DANTE STEFFENINO (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » Shippensbu­rg’s redshirt senior returned to action for the first time since early December and wrestled at 133 pounds for the first time this season and helped the Raiders turn back Millersvil­le 21-14 last Tuesday in Shippensbu­rg. Steffenino defeated Alex Baider 7-4, the latter ranked No. 5 in Super Region I. He used a first-period takedown and a fourpoint near fall for the momentum in the match. He hadn’t taken the mat since he went 0-2 at 141 pounds at the PSAC Championsh­ips on Dec. 9 in Edinboro. DYLAN EDDINGER (BOYERTOWN) » The junior ran a leg on the DMR for the St. Joseph’s men’s indoor track team at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 26 in University Park which finished third with an IC4A qualifying time of 9:55.46. That ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Conference performanc­e list. Eddinger also ranks 11th on the A-10 list in the 1,000 meter run with an adjusted time of 2:30.76 and 11th in the 800 meter run with an adjusted time of 1:54.86. ALEX MCCULLOUGH (OWEN J. ROBERTS) » The senior captured two events to lead the Bloomsburg men’s swim team to a 125.5-79.5 victory over Susquehann­a on Jan. 19 in Selinsgrov­e. McCullough won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.00 and tied for first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.60. Senior Sam Feiser (Owen J. Roberts) and freshman Noah Cancro (Spring-Ford) each swam a leg on the 400 medley relay which finished first with a time of 3:37.15. CHAD SMILEY (SPRING-FORD) » The freshman got off to a slow start on the

pole vault with the Monmouth men’s indoor track team but he found his rhythm at the Ramapo College Season Opener on Jan. 19 in Mahwah, N.J. He finished tied for 6th with a height of 13 feet, 5 ¼ inches. That ranks fifth on the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference performanc­e list. Smiley competed in four indoor meets for the Hawks prior to that and didn’t obtain a height in any of them. MEHKI CLEMENS (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The 6-foot senior is leading the 12-6 Rosemont men’s basketball team in scoring with a 15.4 average but in the last six games, his average is 17.3 to help the Ravens win five straight before losing 72-71 to Gwynedd Mercy in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game last Wednesday in Rosemont. Clemens had 23 points in that game and had 23 points to kick off the team’s winning streak in a 78-70 triumph over Immaculata on Jan. 11, also in Rosemont. CONNOR CHOATE (DANIEL BOONE) » The 6-foot-2 senior leads the Marymount men’s volleyball team with 72 digs, the Saints kicking off the season with a 5-2 non-league record. He also has 15 assists and had a season-high 17 digs in a 3-1 victory over Wittenberg on Jan. 10 in Springfiel­d, OH. Choate also had 16 digs in a 3-1 triumph over Benedictin­e on Jan. 13 in Lisle, Ill. He has 559 career digs and, after spending two seasons as an outside hitter, has 271 career kills. JC GARGES (POTTSGROVE) » The Eastern senior has his name on the Middle Atlantic Conference performanc­e list in two events. He’s 16th on the 3,000 meter run after finishing 24th in the Coach I Open on Jan. 13 in Lancaster with a time of 9:36.61. Garges is 17th on the list in the 5,000 meter run after finishing seventh in the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 20 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic

Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. with a time of 16:30.37. His career bests are 9:11.65 in the 3k and 16:00.71 in the 5k. BRYCE GROSHARDT (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The junior co-captain had a big part as the King’s men’s swim team defeated Lycoming 174-87 and FDU Florham 186-65 in a Middle Atlantic Conference tri-meet last Saturday in WilkesBarr­e. Groshardt finished first in the 200 IM in 2:06.30 and swam the leadoff leg on the 200 medley relay which finished first with a time of 1:40.68. He also was second in both the 200 freestyle in 1:50.76 and the 200 backstroke in 2:05.60. The Monarchs are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in MAC meets. RAE SANTORA (DANIEL BOONE) » The senior kicked off her season with the Rider women’s indoor track team by finishing 21st in the mile run at the Wagner Invitation­al on Jan. 5 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Her time was 5:21.55. She returned to Ocean Breeze for the Spartan Invitation­al on Jan. 12 and finished second with an improved time of 5:18.48. She also ran a leg on the Bronc’s DMR in that meet and helped the group finish third with a time of 12:53.42. BECCA HEMINGWAY( BOY ER TOWN )» The Kutztown freshman finished ninth in the long jump with a 16 foot, 8 inch effort and tied for ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inch at the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 19 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, N.Y. facing a number of Division I athletes. In the school’s Golden Bear Invitation­al Jan. 11-12 in Kutztown, Hemingway finished fifth in the high jump with a personal record leap of 5 feet, 1 ¾ inches. She also ran a leg with the 4x400 relay which finished seventh in 4:35.95.
