N. Hanover Street fire quickly extinguished

POTTSTOWN » Firefighters responded quickly Tuesday after a fire broke out in a building along North Hanover Street.

Pottstown Fire Department got a call for smoke coming from the ceiling of a building on North Hanover Street between Chestnut and King streets at around 2:57 p.m. Tuesday.

Pottstown Fire Chief Michael Lessar said they received the call from a contractor who was working inside the building to repair broken and frozen pipes. Upon arrival, firefighters opened the ceiling of the first floor and found a working fire between the first and second floor.

“A contractor was in the process of sweating one of the pipes and he caught some insulation next to one of the pipes and he immediately called us,” said Pottstown Fire Chief Michael Lessar.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and checked the property for any additional flames. Authorities said the fire was under control within 10 minutes.

No injuries were reported and no other individuals were inside the building at the time of the call.

“The building next door was occupied but there was no damage, no smoke in there as well so they were able to return safely,” said Lessar.

North Hanover Street remained closed off between King Street and Chestnut Street for about an hour.
