3 sentenced in death of man found beaten down in Berks

READING, PA. » Three more defendants have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the death of a man found beaten at the bottom of an eastern Pennsylvan­ia embankment.

Twenty-two-year-old Kyle Adams was sentenced last week to 20 to 40 years in the December 2016 death of 18-year-old Donavin Yenser, who was beaten near the Pagoda atop Mount Penn in Reading.

The Reading Eagle reports that 20-year-old Paul Cook Jr., 21-year-old Joseph White and 20-year-old Skylar Kerns pleaded guilty Tuesday and were sentenced in accordance with agreements with Berks County prosecutor­s.

Cook apologized before he was sentenced to 3½ to 15 years with credit for 453 days already served. Kerns, who also apologized in court, and White both received timeserved minimum terms. Neither was accused of actually attacking the victims.

Woman in affair that led US rep to resign didn’t file to run

HARRISBURG, PA. » A woman whose affair with a married eight-term Pennsylvan­ia congressma­n led to his resignatio­n didn’t file paperwork to run for a U.S. House seat after she announced her bid last month.

Shannon Edwards’ name didn’t appear in a Department of State listing of candidates filing to run for Congress by Tuesday evening’s deadline. Edwards didn’t return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Edwards announced last month that she’d seek the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle of Pittsburgh. Candidacy requiremen­ts include submitting the signatures of 1,000 registered party voters from the district.

Man charged in double homicide pleads in unrelated DUI case

FAIRVIEW, PA. » A man accused of killing his wife and her adult daughter in their northweste­rn Pennsylvan­ia home has been sentenced to six months in prison in an unrelated driving under the influence case.

The Erie Times-News reports that 58-year-old Regis Brown, who is being held without bond in Erie County in the double homicide, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeano­r. He had withdrawn an earlier plea but defense attorney Thomas Brasco said Brown decided against “exhausting the commonweal­th’s time” in fighting the November 2016 DUI case.

Brown is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault in the March 9 Fairview Township slayings of 53-year-old Michele Brown and 35-yearold Tammy Greenawalt. Police allege that Brown tied up Greenawalt in a rocking chair and stabbed her, then bludgeoned his wife in the garage.

Man pleads to charges in 2016 hit-run death of bicyclist

SCRANTON, PA. » A man whose car struck and killed a bicyclist in northeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia in 2016 and then fled the scene has pleaded guilty to three charges.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reports that 58-year-old Thomas Gill pleaded guilty Wednesday to accidents involving death, aggravated assault by motor vehicle and a summary traffic violation.

Gill was charged in the death of 26-year-old Michael Harmer, who was struck as he was riding his bicycle in Scranton in August 2016. Police said the sport utility vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and jumped a curb, and the driver fled the scene.

Investigat­ors said he acknowledg­ed having used marijuana, heroin and cocaine before driving. Gill told police that “I shouldn’t have been behind the wheel.” Asked in court Wednesday if that was true, he said “Yes.”

Lawmaker accused in abuse allegation­s won’t seek re-election

HARRISBURG, PA. » A Pennsylvan­ia lawmaker who is the subject of a protection­from-abuse order against him by another lawmaker over claims he was violent and abusive toward her says he won’t run for re-election.

State Rep. Nick Miccarelli of Delaware County said in a statement Wednesday that he’s decided to remove his name from the ballot.

Miccarelli says it’s in his best interests to move on to a new chapter.

Miccarelli has said that fellow Republican Rep. Tarah Toohil’s allegation­s are false.

Toohil alleges Miccarelli pulled a gun and threatened to kill her when they dated several years ago. She also says he’s been physically intimidati­ng her at the Capitol this year.

Crash in suburban Philadelph­ia kills 2

HORSHAM, PA. » Authoritie­s say two people were killed in a three-vehicle accident in suburban Philadelph­ia.

Police said the crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Horsham.

The cause of the accident is under investigat­ion. Police haven’t said whether they suspect weather was a factor.
