Saturday, April 7 is National Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s “Opening Day for Trails.” Outdoor enthusiasts and trail lovers are invited to join in the sixth annual celebration aimed a kicking off the trail season. “Event organizers and volunteers from across the country have arranged hiking, biking, running and other outdoor activities to celebrate trails and the benefits they bring to their communities,” according to a press release from National Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC). Events are planned in Chester and Montgomery counties and the Philadelphia region. Events include Bike to Opening Day for Trails from downtown Narberth to Manayunk and back from 9:30 a.m. to noon; a family-friendly, 10-mile ride along the Chester Valley Trail from Berwyn to Exton; Morning Bird Walk at John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove (1201 Pawlings Road, Audubon, PA 19403) 8-10 a.m.; the John Heinz at Tinicum National Wildlife Refuge joins in the celebration with Nature Tots!-Take to the Trails Day! from 10 to 11 a.m., according to information at www. fws.gov/refuge/John_Heinz/visit/ upcomingevents.html; and many more. For additional information, check railstotrails.org/openingday and follow #RTCOpeningDay on social media. “Opening Day 2018 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act, federal legislation that established the country’s National Scenic Trails and National Recreation Trails,” according to RTC. “The act made possible many of the country’s railbanked rail-trails as a result of the 1983 Railbanking Amendment to the National Trails System Act.
