Spring-Ford baseball shuts out Methacton, 9-0

Three pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout Thursday to key the Spring-Ford baseball team’s 9-0 victory over Methacton in Pioneer Athletic Conference Liberty Division play.

Grant Calvarese threw five innings of three-hit, five-strikeout ball before David McCurry and Chris Boggs finished it out. Calvarese was credited with the winning decision.

At the plate. Spring-Ford was led by Nate Campbell’s 2-for-3 effort that included a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Ben Christian was Methacton’s leading batter, going 2-for-3. PHOENIXVIL­LE 9, POPE JOHN PAUL II 1 » Devon Goryl drove in a pair of runs off 2-for-3 hitting, and Kevin Cushing worked five innings of three-hit ball for the Phantoms in their PAC Frontier Division victory over the Golden Panthers. UPPER MERION 4, UPPER PERKIOMEN 2 » Mike Hutchinson spread out nine hits and didn’t allow an earned run while striking out eight to lead the Vikings. Upper Merion turned the game on a three-run sixth inning. Charlie Haag and Dave Kilroy each turned in 2-for-4 batting efforts for the Indians. PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 17, MERCY 0 » The Panthers were able to make quick work of Mercy Career, halting their Tri-County League game after three innings on the 15-run rule.

Perkiomen (1-0, 4-0) got off to its fast start with Jose Aviles hitting a two-run single in the first. Carlos Torres followed with a two-RBI double in the second, and Manny Ariza and Sam Glavin each hit two-run singles in the third to back the combined nohit pitching of Chris Pow, Torres and Garrett Knowles. COLLEGIUM 14, WEST-MONT 3 » A threerun second inning was all the Wings could muster as they fell to Collegium Charter in a four-inning Tri-County League contest. DANIEL BOONE 17, GARDEN SPOT 5 » Winning pitcher Brett Goodrich doubled in a pair of runs in a three-run first inning to help lead the Blazers to their first win of the 2018 season.

Carson Zuber had two hits including a double, drove in a pair of runs, and scored four runs. Mikey Gregos also doubled to lead the Blazers.

UPPER PERKIOMEN 4, UPPER MERION 1 » Karlee Fretz threw four-hit, 12-strikeout ball for seven innings, and Alyssa Sullivan had two RBI alongside Taylor Lindsay’s 3-for-4 batting in the Indians’ PAC Frontier Division win over the Vikings.

POTTSTOWN 15, COLLEGIUM 6 » Ebony Reddick maintained her torrid scoring pace, leading the Trojans past Collegium Charter in their non-league game.

One day after hitting the 200-goal mark for her scholastic career, Reddick connected eight times in helping Pottstown open a 9-3 halftime lead. Da’Zah Reguster added a hat trick, and Abbie Krause collected four goals to support the six-save goaltendin­g of Reilly Owens. POTTSGROVE 15, QUAKERTOWN 2 » Emily Williams headed a quartet of multiple-goal scorers that propelled the Falcons past the Panthers in their non-league contest.

Williams’ five goals gave her game scoring honors ahead of the hat tricks from Brooke Saylor, Allie Reppert and Sydney Tornetta. Defensivel­y, Mya Krueger made 10 saves in goal for Pottsgrove. BERKS CATHOLIC 17, DANIEL BOONE 1 » Katie Cressman scored five goals, and Annie Moser and Brianna Spencer had four apiece for the Saints, in their Berks Conference win over the Blazers. Hunter Pennington had Boone’s lone score. ACADEMY OF NOTRE DAME 15, HILL SCHOOL 10 » The Blues were unable to match AND’s early goal production and fell to their non-league guests.

Jordan Hower and Jess Ciarrocchi each had hat tricks for the Hill, which played Notre Dame even in the second half after falling behind 11-6 in the first. Giavanna Tabarrini contribute­d two goals while Tatumn Eccleston (three assists) and Logan Clouser added solo tallies. Hannah Spease was credited with a pair of assists.

Boys track

METHACTON 94.5, SPRING-FORD 55.5 » The Warriors made their PAC Liberty Division win over the Rams official with Nick Ruppert’s victory in the pole vault.

Ruppert cleared the nine-foot mark to give Methacton an additional five points, It got three more by placing second in the event.

Girls track

METHACTON 86.5, SPRING-FORD 63.5 » Needing just two points to make official a win over the Rams, the Warriors picked up 13 from the weather reschedule­d pole vault and javelin events.

Maggie Welsh threw the javelin 102 feet, five inches to head the Warriors’ sweep of the first three spots. They got another four in the pole vault, which Spring-Ford’s Melissa Israel won by clearing the bar at 10 feet.
