Foles gets bonus via contract re-do
Minutes after Nick Foles tweeted a photo of himself, his wife and his infant daughter Friday, the smiles made sense.
The Super Bowl MVP and the Eagles agreed on a contract revision giving him a sizable signing bonus and an option year he can void, a league source confirmed.
Foles was due to make $7 million this season. The NFL Network reported that Foles got a $2 million signing bonus, incentives for starts, a third year on the deal and the option to become a free agent after this, the second year of the pact.
It was a classy move by the Eagles, who earlier in the offseason gave guard Stefen Wisniewski a $250,000 bonus for this season after he narrowly missed a playing time incentive last year.
Foles guided the Eagles to a 5-1 record, including the playoffs, in place of injured starter Carson Wentz. Foles completed 72.6 percent of his passes for 971 yards, six touchdowns, one interception and a 115.7 rating. In the 41-33 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots, Foles threw for 373 yards, three TDs, one pick and a 106.1 rating and caught a scoring pass from tight end Trey Burton.
It’s been an enjoyable offseason for Foles, who appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show and was the recipient of a full-page ad from Matthew McConaughey in appreciation of his stellar performance in the tile game. “From one local to another, Congratulations Nick Foles,” the ad in the Statesman-American read. “Just keep livin. Matthew McConaughey.”
Wentz remains the Eagles’ starter and still hopes to be the quarterback on opening day when the Eagles oppose the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field.
