Spring reorg for success in 2018

-

It’s finally feeling like spring, and that means that the grass is growing, the snow is gone, and it’s fine for your Spring Clean Up. But don’t waste this opportunity, take some extra steps to get organized this spring.

If you’re like me, organization doesn’t come naturally. No matter how badly I would like to be, it’s just hard. But the fresh start after spring cleaning cleans the slate to bring in new processes that will help.

So, how to declutter 101. It’s one of the biggest things that I always tell my client, when it’s time to sell it’s time to declutter. Going into this spring, whether you are looking to sell or just get organized, here are my favorite organization tips.

Take care of your documents

Whenever mail comes in at my house, it tends to pile up. That’s why my wife and I have made the decision to tackle this head on. We’ve adopted a document inbox; right out of the gate we sort the mail and only focus on our important mail.

Now, I know that this is a really a second point, but this one will be for free. Have a donation box. No, this doesn’t mean for your kids to donate to your home renovation fund. It’s a box to keep track of all of your donations you’ve made through the year. The same goes for those running their own business, make sure that you keep track of expenses for next tax season.

Organize your belongings

I don’t know why it is, but my house just keeps accumulating more and more jackets. Eventually, the closet space dedicated to them is overflowing. Next thing I know, I find them hung over the back of the couch.

Making sure that you keep up to date with your belongings can be hard, but that is why spring cleaning is great. Every year, I end up taking all my old jackets down to Goodwill, just to make sure that I keep up to date.

A clean closet is a happy closet, so make sure that you have all the storage bins you need to keep it clean.

Pantry

Over the years, my wife has stocked up our pantry, but sometimes you need to go through it and get rid of the excess. As the years go by, some food perishes, and the last thing you want to keep in your house is that.

If you can manage to get these systems in place, you’ll be set when it comes time to sell your home. Whether it’s this year, next year, or 15 years down the line, the hardest thing is to declutter. So, get ahead of the curve with your spring cleaning head start. You won’t regret it and it’ll make your house more appealing for friends coming over, to impress

the in-laws, or to list your home on the market. Wayne Megill is the principal of The Wayne Megill Real Estate Team of Keller Williams Brandywine Valley and the president of Megill Homes Inc.
