Early morning fire in Lancaster row house kills 1

LANCASTER, PA. » An early morning row house fire blamed on unattended cooking has claimed the life of one man in Lancaster.

Firefighte­rs were called to the home just after 1 a.m. Saturday and reported flames coming out of the rear of the house.

Officials said a man found in a second-floor bedroom was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity hasn’t been released.

Battalion Chief Ken Barton said there were eight to 10 people in the home at the time of the blaze, but no one else was injured.

Damage to the home was estimated at about $100,000.

Driver who hit family, injuring 7, won’t face charges

WILKES-BARRE, PA. » Authoritie­s say no charges will be filed against the driver who struck a family of six and a relative on a quiet residentia­l street in northeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia last summer.

All seven people, including a 10-month-old girl in a stroller, were seriously injured in the Aug. 25 crash in the Mountain Top area near Wilkes-Barre.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said Friday that Rice Township police, state police and her office investigat­ed. She said the evidence made it clear that the crash wasn’t intentiona­l.

Salavantis said law enforcemen­t eliminated speed as a possible factor along with use of alcohol, drugs or a cellphone and roadway and vehicle defects.

The family has filed a civil lawsuit against the driver alleging negligence.

Boy to face attempted homicide charge in shooting

ORBISONIA, PA. » Authoritie­s say a 12-year-old boy will face attempted homicide and other charges following a shooting in central Pennsylvan­ia.

State police in Huntingdon County allege that the boy shot a 54-year-old man in Cromwell Township at about 3 p.m. Friday and then fled the scene on an all-terrain vehicle.
