Pottstown softball earns first win in three years

It was a dry spell dating back three years.

But the Pottstown softball team made “was” the operative word Tuesday. The Trojans ended that long period of futility at Reading, scoring a 9-4 victory over the Red Knights — the first for new head coach Jon McKee.

Caitlyn Mattingly gave Pottstown a solid completega­me pitching effort. The sophomore scattered five hits and yielded just one walk while touched for two unearned runs over seven ininngs.

At the plate, the Trojans benefited from the hot bats of Gianna Epps, Katarina Kinkade and Milayla Hampton. Hampton and Epps each went 2-for-4 — Hampton with two doubles and three RBI, Epps with another two-bagger and one RBI — while Kincade was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Colleen Cappiello chipped in with a 1-for-3 and two RBI.

Pottstown’s last winning outcome came during a 2015 season that saw it go 1-19 overall. UPPER PERKIOMEN 15, NORRISTOWN 2 » While Lily Dibble provided a big pitching effort, the Indians banged out 17 hits as they rolled over the Eagles in a Pioneer Athletic Conference divisional crossover game.

Dibble scattered three hits and four walks through the seven-inning affair, fanning 13 and limiting Norristown to a pair of runs in the fourth. By that time, UP had built a 10-run lead with Morgan Lindsay driving in four runs while Taylor Croak and Autumn Gahman each had two. METHACTON 5, POTTSGROVE 1 » Emily Kuberski, Aubrey Seal and Nichole Dorn banged out eight of the Warriors’ 11 hits as they handled the Falcons in their PAC divisional crossover game. OWEN J. ROBERTS 4, PHOENIXVIL­LE 2 » Sam Walsh was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats in their game with the Phantoms, scattering seven hits and one walk against five strikeouts. PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 11, WEST-MONT CHRISTIAN 6 » A five-run fifth inning enabled the Panthers to break out of a tie game with the Wings and post the victory in Tri-County League play.

Lena Felix drove in three runs with help from a home run and triple to head Perkiomen, whose offense was keyed by Frances Del Toro going 3-for-4. Ally Brauchle was the winning pitcher for Perkiomen School.

Baseball

PHOENIXVIL­LE 14, NORRISTOWN 3 » Kevin Cushing drove in three runs off 2-for-3 hitting, and the Phantoms rode a big early lead to victory over the Eagles in their PAC divisional crossover game.

Devon Goryl and Jon Miller each added two RBI to Phoenixvil­le’s total. It padded an initial 8-3 lead with four runs in the fifth, backing starter Quinn Danna’s three-hit showing for five and Justin Blakey’s two frames of relief. METHACTON 9, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 0 » The Warriors’ five-run rally during the top of the second inning proved to be plenty in their nonconfere­nce showing with the Crusaders.

Mark Engelman finished with a hit and three RBI while Jordan Lukas was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI out of the leadoff spot. Colin Schrader got the start and scattered three hits and seven strikeouts across four innings of work. DONEGAL 4, DANIEL BOONE 1» Carson Zuber, Connor Cleaver and Brett Goodrich each had two hits to head the Blazers in a non-league loss to Donegal.
