Shalaway brothers battle it out in javelin

The Shalaway brothers Elijah and Ethan went head-to-head in the javelin throw at the East Preliminar­y Round on May 24-26 in Tampa, Fla.

Wake Forest sophomore Elijah finished 16th with a toss of 203 feet, 10 inches. Kentucky senior Ethan was 17th with a heave of 203 feet, 9 inches, one inch less than his younger brother.

The Shalaways, both Boyertown Area grads, didn’t advance to the NCAA Championsh­ips this week in Eugene, Ore. They also squared off in the East Preliminar­y Round last year, Ethan finishing ninth in 218 feet, 6 inches and going on to finish 22nd in the Nationals with a 213 foot, 4 inch effort. Elijah finished 37th with a toss of 186 feet, 10 inches.

Left-hander Elijah’s season best effort this spring came in the Penn Relays on April 26-28 in Philadelph­ia when he had a toss of 217 feet, 10 inches. He finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championsh­ip May 10-12 in Coral Gables, Fla. with a heave of 213 feet, 6 inches.

Right-hander Ethan finished eighth in the Southeast Conference Championsh­ips with a toss of 212 feet 1 inch. He spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons at Pittsburgh before transferri­ng to Kentucky. He finished 43rd in the East Preliminar­y Round as a sophomore and 15th as a freshman for the Panthers. CHRIS KACHMAR (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » The 6-foot2, 178-pound junior right-hander finished with a 3-3 record in 12 games and 11 starts with one complete game for the Lipscomb baseball team, the Bison finishing 24-30 overall and was 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference after losing 7-6 to North Florida on May 25 in Jacksonvil­le, Fla. Kachmar had a 4.43 earned run average. In 65 innings, he gave up 67 hits and 35 runs, 32 earned, with 26 walks and a team-high 66 strikeouts. He spent the previous two seasons at Palm Beach Community College. BEKAH SLATTERY (DANIEL BOONE) » The Lock Haven junior pitcher was named to the Division II Collegiate Commission­er’s Associatio­n All-American honorable mention

list in softball it was announced on May 23. Earlier, the left-hander was named to the DII CCA All-Atlantic Region first team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Associatio­n All-Atlantic Region team and was PSAC Central Pitcher of the Year and a first-team pick. Slattery finished with a 20-7 record for the 38-14 Bald Eagles with a 1.60 earned run average and 219 strikeouts. DAULTON WEEKS (BOYERTOWN) » The senior third baseman was named to the Conference Commission­er’s Associatio­n Division II All American second team on May 21 for his outstandin­g play with the 35-19 South Carolina-Aiken baseball team. Earlier, the 6-foot, 200-pounder was named to the Peach Belt Conference first team. Weeks hit .343 (74-for-216) with a teamhigh 15 doubles, a triple and a team-high 14 home runs. He also led the Pacers with 57 runs batted and was second in ruins scored with 45. XAVIER SMITH, STEPH SIEVERS (DANIEL BOONE) » The Penn State senior Smith will be a member of the 4x100 relay at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track Championsh­ips next weekend in Eugene, Ore. The unit finished fourth at the East Preliminar­y Round on May 26 in Tampa, Fla. with a time of 39.61. They are seeded 17th at the Nationals. Nittany Lion junior Sievers (Daniel Boone) finished 10th in the javelin throw (159 feet, 11 inches) and is seeded 22nd in the Nationals. HAILEY BARRETT (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The junior started all 19 games in goal for the Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse team, the Chanticlee­rs finishing 10-9 overall and 4-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. She gave up 195 goals and had 173 saves. Sophomore keeper Regan McComb (Upper Perkiomen) came off the bench in four games and in 99.09 minutes of action gave up nine goals with six saves. CONNOR KLEMANN (SPRINGFORD) » The 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior started at third base for the Penn State baseball team, the Nittany Lions finishing 1534 overall and 3-21 in the Big Ten Conference. Klemann hit .234 (40-for-171) with five doubles, a triple, four home runs, 22 runs scored and 22 runs batted in. He also stole five bases in six attempts. In the field, he made nine errors on 90 chances (.900). CAROLINE MCLAUGHLIN (POPE JOHN PAUL II) » The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associatio­n announced its Division II All-Region honorees on May 15 and the West Chester senior earned two citations. McLaughlin was selected after finishing second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.55) and helping the 4x400 relay finish third (3:52.30) at the PSAC Outdoor Championsh­ip May 3-5 in Slippery Rock. BRET CLARKE (SPRING-FORD) » The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior right-hander was a weekend starter for the Stony Brook baseball team, the Seawolves finishing 3225 and ending the season with a 9-4 loss to Hartford in the America East Conference title game on May 26 in Orono, Me. Clarke was 2-7 with a 5.25 earned run average. In 61.2 innings, he gave up 64 hits and 61 runs, 36 earned, with 33 walks and 47 strikeouts JOSH FULLMER (OWEN J. ROBERTS) » The freshman played in 32 games with 20 starts for the Arcadia baseball team, the Knights finishing 31-16 overall and 15-2 in MAC Commonweal­th play and saw the season end with a 4-1 loss to No. 1 seed Rowan in the NCAA Division III Championsh­ip May 19 in York. Fullmer batted .270 (24-for-89) with seven doubles, two triples, a home run, 18 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. KUTTER ENDY (OWEN J. ROBERTS) » The senior righthande­r was the closer with the 20-23 Neumann baseball team. He finished the season with a 2-2 record and three saves with a 3.21 earned run average. In 20 games out of the bull pen, Endy worked 33.1 innings and gave up 31 hits and 15 runs, 12 earned, with 12 walks and 16 strikeouts. Entering this season, he had a 1-1 record in 17 games. BRANDON LEACRAFT (SPRING-FORD) » The junior finished 17th in the javelin throw at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championsh­ips May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C. He posted a toss of 188 feet, 5 inches. Leacraft earned his trip to the nationals after finishing third in the PSAC Tournament May 3-5 in Slippery Rock with a career-best throw of 201 feet, 10 inches. STEPHEN MUSCOVITCH (OWEN J. ROBERTS) » The 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior was the right-handed specialist out of the bull pen for the Millersvil­le baseball team, the Marauders finishing 31-16 on the season and going 3-2 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regionals and seeing the season end with a 5-0 loss to Seton Hill on May 21 in West Lawn. Muscovitch had a 1-1 record in a save in 15 games.
