MCCC to host career fair on June 28
Community college career fair includes 15 prospective employers
POTTSTOWN » Montgomery County Community College is hosting an free outdoor community career fair Thursday, June 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at its Sustainability and Innovation Hub building.
“Again, just letting the community know that we are here as not only that educational resource but also start thinking about it as the standpoint of workforce and workforce development,” MCCC Director of Communications Takisha Mundy said. “I think whoever comes should feel like they’re having a good experience.”
There have been many career fairs at MCCC but not a community event to this capacity, according to Mundy, who has been with MCCC since September of last year.
About 15 prospective employers will be at the event, ranging from Pottstown Hospital to Blommer Chocolate Co., Mundy said. Some of the companies will be returning from past events at MCCC, but others are new.
Also at the event, Victory Bank will be providing information for financial literacy, Mundy said.
Pottstown Works, a part of The Salvation Army that works to “bring people out of poverty by helping them overcome barriers to work,” and MCCC Career Services will hold 15-minute resume reviews for people attending the event.
“If people have hard copies of their resumes and they want to get an eye on it to say ‘Hey, what can I do to spruce this up?’ or ‘Is there anything that I’m just doing completely wrong on here?’” Mundy said, adding that she has how-to guides that will be handed out.
MCCC’s workforce will also be hosting short information sessions to highlight available programs and courses.
“We have some really strong programs that could lead to careers,” Mundy said. “There’s some great things out here. In some of these areas, you could walk out of these programs and into an entry level career.”
In addition, there will also be activities for kids.
“We’re going to do some spin art,” Mundy said. “We have a candy maker … so they can design their own powdered candy.”
Home Depot will supply a “play station,” where kids will have the opportunity to build “small pieces and paint them,” Mundy said.
Free blood tests will be given by MCCC students.
There will also be a food truck and Kona Ice, according to Mundy.
This event coincides with the fourth annual 5k PDIDA run and Pottstown Farm and Artisan Regional Market second farmer’s market of the year at Riverfront Park.
“The cool thing is that there is several events going on at the same time,” Mundy said. “We all met and kind of thought it would be great idea to have us all in one space to one offer the community and bigger event but also to spread out and share the love, if you will.”
