Why so few American flags on display on Memorial Day?
On Memorial Day, I drove up Philadelphia Avenue (Route 73) in Gilbertsville and Boyertown. In Gilbertsville, I drove from Bermont Motors to BB&T Bank at the main intersection of Boyertown. Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in active military service while defending our country.
The Boyertown Lions Club installs approximately 115 3-foot-by-5-foot American flags at businesses throughout Boyertown and the surrounding areas on six holidays for a small donation. If you do not count the flags that the Lions Club installs in that area, only 46 other homes or businesses had a small or large flag displayed at their home or business from Bermont Motors to BB&T Bank.
I counted about 180 homes and businesses in that area that did not have a flag displayed. I also drove through a 15-yearold housing development near my home that has about 135 homes and only 31 homes had a small or large flag displayed.
I checked out the flag prices at Walmart. They had a pack of two flags, 12-inch-by18-inch, for $1.98 which you could stick in your flower bed or yard. They also had a 3-foot-by-5-foot flag with a long pole and bracket for sale for $8.98 that you could fasten to your home, light post, mailbox post or wherever you choose. I’m sure they can also be purchased at other stores. If you are unable to install the bracket, I am sure a relative, friend, neighbor or co-worker would be willing to help you with the installation.
The next holiday is Independence Day on July 4 but you do not have to wait for a major holiday to display the American flag. It can be displayed every day of the year.
I would like to challenge everyone who is reading this and does not display the American flag to go out and buy a flag and put it on display. You can also encourage your friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers to do the same. Let’s make your town look beautiful and show your patriotism!
