Local groups fight drugs, violence

POTTSTOWN » For the 10th year, Harris Family Ministries and New Life Assembly of God are doing their part to end drugs and violence in the borough.

The two organizations have invited the community to Riverfront Park Saturday where they can find helpful information and resources related to drug addiction and violence for their Stop the Drugs Stop the Violence Crusade.

“The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the drug epidemic and the violence that is ruining our community more so than ever, killing our children and adult family members,” the Rev. Georgiana Harris of Harris Family Ministries wrote in an email about the event. “Those that don’t die from a drug overdose, lives are ruined because they can’t function. Families are being shattered. Crime is running rampant like never before in our area. We can’t just sit idly by and say we’ll pray about it. Prayer without works is dead. So, we are working to bring about change.”

The event, as in previous years, will be a large family picnic with free food and beverages for all who attend. Public defenders, law enforcement and area family centers, among others, will be set up in the park to offer resources and information to those interested. A keynote speaker will address guests on Saturday, followed by a panel discussion. Additionally, the event will also feature a prayer tent and entertainment for children.

The Stop the Drugs Stop the Violence Crusade will run from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14.
