LIMERICK » A car fire on Route 422 was turning plenty of heads on Wednesday as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

Limerick Fire Company reported on its website Wednesday that firefighters responded to a car fire on Route 422 in the early afternoon. The fire was reported at 1:30 p.m. on the westbound side of Route 422 near the off ramp to Lewis Road.

The driver of the Volkswagen Passat noticed the engine light turn on and that the vehicle was losing power as it was travelling west on Route 422, according to Limerick Fire Chief Ken Shuler. The driver, who was not identified by the fire department, then pulled over and the front end of the vehicle quickly caught fire.

The driver and a passenger were both able to exit the vehicle without injury.

As Limerick Police arrived, they transmitted that the vehicle was fully involved.

Fire crews arrived on scene and extinguished the fire while fire police assisted with traffic control, according to Limerick Fire Company.

Shuler said traffic was shut down while crews worked to extinguish the flames, which only took a few minutes. The left lane remained open to keep traffic moving.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is looking into what caused the fire.
