Three charged in $700 theft from wallet
NORTH COVENTRY » Three people were charged by police Tuesday after they allegedly took $700 out of a wallet they found outside a Wawa.
On Aug. 30, North Coventry Township Police Department responded to the Wawa at 260 W. Schuylkill Road for the report of a lost/stolen wallet. The victim told police that he believed that he had left his wallet on top of his vehicle as he drove away from the pumps. The victim stated that his wallet contained $700 in cash as well as numerous identification cards and a credit card, police said.
Police say video footage of the incident showed a blue VW Jetta Wagon pull up to the same pump where the victim was. At that time, a white female walked over to where the wallet was last seen and picked it up. Officers were able to review prior footage inside Wawa and obtain still photos of the suspects. Officers then posted the images and information on Crimewatch, where tips from the public helped police identify the individuals.
The female seen retrieving the wallet was identified as Cassandra Freese of Pottstown, police said. With Freese was Jordan McVey of Manheim and Marissa Hart of Collingdale. All three were interviewed and it was determined that the three were all aware that the wallet was lost and decided to split the cash between the three of them. The wallet was later thrown from the vehicle in a wooded area in South Coventry, according to police.
With the cooperation of Freese and Hart, a search was conducted for the wallet. It was recovered with the identification cards still inside which will be returned to the victim, police said.
Freese, Hart and McVey were all charged with one count each of theft of mislaid or lost property, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.
