AMITY » The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced late Wednesday that work to replace the Route 562 bridge over Manatawny Creek in will take longer than originally anticipated.

“During excavation, crews discovered the soil would not provide the desired bearing capacity to support the footers for the new bridge,” Assistant District Executive for Construction Alfred A. Picca said. “This requires some additional design work, as well as having the contractor constructing sub-footers to provide additional support for the bridge.”

The new bridge was originally anticipated to be open in November, but the revised estimate is for

it to open in May 2019. Until then, Route 562 will remain closed and detoured between Old Airport Road and Route 662. Local access is being maintained.

The posted passenger vehicle detour utilizes Old Airport Road and Route 662. A separate posted truck detour routes Route 562 east truck traffic on Route 662 south, Church Lane south, Route 422 east, River Bridge Road north, Route 422 west, Route 662 north and Old Airport Road north.

The Route 562 west truck detour routes trucks on Old Airport Road south, Route 662 south, Church Lane south, Route 422 east, River Bridge Road north, Route 422 west, and Route 662 north.

Work began May 18 on the project to replace the existing 2-span steel stringer bridge with a 2-span concrete bulb-tee beam bridge. New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. New Enterprise, Pa., is the general contractor on the $2,467,134 project.
