Steel River’s season opener ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’

Steel River Playhouse proudly kicks off its 2018-2019 Season with the smash hit “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, premiering Oct. 5 to 21. This Tony Award winning Broadway sensation, created by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and Hugh Wheeler (book), is considered a masterpiece of music and suspense.

Director John McGraw and Musical Director Julie Eurillo, bring to life the story of Sweeney Todd, the dark tale of a barber unjustly imprisoned by corrupt Judge Turpin, who returns to 19th century London after 15 years to take his revenge on the man who took him from his wife and young daughter. Todd’s need for vengeance becomes indiscriminately murderous — and profitable — when he partners with the unscrupulous Mrs. Lovett and opens his new barber practice above her failing meat pie shop. With his busy straight razors and her new secret ingredient, their fame grows until Todd comes face to face with the judge. Can he avenge his family before their dastardly deeds are uncovered?

Veterans and new comers round out the five star cast, breathing life into this thrillingly immersive musical. Capturing the characters vivacity, Sweeney Todd stars Ben Fried as Sweeney Todd, Alicia Huppman as Mrs. Lovett, Doug Pratt as Judge Turpin, John Williams as Anthony, and Madison Devlin as Johanna. Along with the rest of the remarkable cast, first-rate live orchestra and exceptional creative team, together they construct a production you won’t soon forget.
