A VISIT TO PETER WENTZ FARMSTEAD IS ‘WELL WORTH THE VISIT’

- By Michael T. Snyder For Digital First media

If you haven’t already visited Montgomery County’s Peter Wentz Farmstead, run don’t walk to your car and take yourself, family and friends there. Reviews posted on Trip Advisor give it 4.5 circles out of 5. Bob from Chicago, Illinois wrote “It was awesome, especially if you like visiting old houses! Our guide Ginny was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. The house has been restored really well and contains a great deal of “period” artifacts that are not often seen in one place. Oh, and “Washington slept here!” Well worth a visit.”

Another reviewer thought “It was well worth the trip.”

The Wentz family’s 1758 house is the site’s centerpiece. It has been painstakingly restored and so many of its original features have survived that it is almost like going back 260 years in time. In addition it is a working farm site, so there are the outbuildings and animals including a pair of cows who are trained to work yoked together like oxen.

The upcoming events include something for everybody, from young children to adults. Here are a few:

• Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.— Home and Headquarters: War comes to Worcester. During October 1777 the Wentz family twice had to cope with the presence of George Washington and his staff while simultaneously in the midst of their busy harvest season. You will have the opportunity to experience the camp of Revolutionary War soldiers.

• Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 a.m. — Sign up for this program if you love nature and wildlife. Park staff will lead a walk along the nature trail looking for resident and migrant birds, especially hawks. Adults and children welcome. You’ll need to preregister for this one.
