Big turnout expected for tiny house auction

-

Big things are happening at OJR High School on Friday, Oct. 12!

The OJR Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math Club (STEAM Club) has completed a twoyear project constructing a fully functional tiny house that will be auctioned off at 6 p.m. prior to the OJR Homecoming game.

From 4 to 6 p.m., Styer Real Estate, a local real estate brokerage, will host a “Tiny” Open House to introduce people to this masterpiece of tiny living.

Meredith Jacks, broker of Styer Real Estate and a member of the OJR Education Foundation, said her agents are really looking forward to this event.

“This might be the ‘smallest’ open house we have ever held, but we are expecting a huge turnout,” she said. “The STEAM club students did a phenomenal job, so this should be an easy sell!”

The miniature home is 14 feet long by 8 feet wide and boasts 112 square feet of living space on the first floor, plus two loft areas that add an additional 64 square feet for sleeping and storage. Gorgeous tongue and groove pine and reclaimed oak timbers inside and out, standing seam metal roof, a bathroom with a shower and ready for a compost toilet, plus many other unique details make this a tour not to be missed!

Fully student-designed and student-constructed under the supervision of certified instructors from OJRHS and TCHS (Technical College High School), the house was designed to be as green as possible by using very little water and power.

The school district donated the equipment trailer, and all other materials were either donated, repurposed or paid for through student fundraising and OJR Education Foundation Mini Grants.

The money raised will be utilized by the STEAM Club to fund future projects, which could include additional tiny house builds or the development of a traveling STEAM lab to educate and inspire students in the district. A portion of the sale is also planned as a donation back to the Owen J Roberts Education Foundation.

Jim Wehlan of Treasured Heirlooms, a local auctioneer located on East High Street in Pottstown, will be conducting the auction beginning at 6 p.m. with a starting bid of $10,000. The title exchange will be completed on site by Coventry Motors, located on Pottstown Pike in North Coventry, and the winning bidder can haul their new home off that evening!

The Owen J Roberts Education Foundation is sponsoring a mini food truck festival from 4 to 7 p.m. to coincide with the tiny house event. Vendors include Katja’s Empanadas, Bucktown Grille, Captain’s Curbside Seafood, OMG Smoothies and Dump-N-Roll. The vendors are donating a portion of their proceeds to the OJR Education Foundation, which supports teacher mini-grants and technology in the classroom.
