Vikings qualify for PACs with 0-0 draw against Spring-Ford

The Perkiomen Valley boys soccer team entered Wednesday knowing anything but a loss would qualify it for the Pioneer Athletic Conference Final Four.

One hundred minutes later, job done.

The Vikings lived up to their difficult defensive billing by denying high-scoring Spring-Ford through regulation and overtime for a 0-0 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Spring-Ford.

Perkiomen Valley moved to 7-1-5 in the PAC (9-1-6 overall), its 26 league points earning it a wild card spot for the league playoffs. The semifinals are set for Tuesday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. at Owen J. Roberts.

PV’s Josh Moyer recorded his eighth clean sheet, needing three saves thanks in part to the strong play of defenders AJ Hansen, Brian Holmes, Mark Pirrone, and Steven Warren. Spring-Ford’s Ray Fortebuono also made three saves for his 11th shutout.

Spring-Ford had already clinched the Liberty Division title a night earlier with a 5-3 win over Owen J. Roberts. The Rams finished their league campaign at 8-0-2 Liberty, 11-0-2 PAC, 13-1-3 overall. OLEY VALLEY 2, DANIEL BOONE 0 » Austin Miller had one goal and one assist, and Diego Aparicio had one goal, to lead the Lynx to a victory over the Blazers. ST. BENEDICT’S PREP 6, HILL SCHOOL 0 » The Blues saw their visitors score five goals in the second half in this non-conference matchup.

Celio Pompeu, Ronald Mafunzwain­i, Julian Gomez, Preston Rushmore, Israel Neto and Rhys Armstrong did the scoring while Aurie Briscoe needed just one save to preserve the shutout. Alan Kim made seven saves for Hill.

Girls soccer

POTTSGROVE 7, POTTSTOWN 3 » Skylar Glass registered a hat trick to lead the Falcons to a PAC Frontier Division win against the Trojans.

Lexi Zook added a goal and an assist while Chloe Mangue-Shivak, Avery Makoid and Hailey Strain rounded out the goal scorers with solo tallies. Lana Sorg picked up the win in goal with four saves.

Boys cross country

OWEN J. ROBERTS 23, METHACTON 36» Linus Blatz led the Wildcats’ completion of their PAC Liberty

Division sweep with their victory over the Warriors.

Blatz covered Methacton’s home course in 16:52, beating out Methacton’s top runner Matt Varghese (17:04). David Brunton and Thomas Damiani followed with a 3-4 finish for Owen J (5-0), which had seven runners place in the Top 10. SPRING-FORD 25, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 30 » A 2-3 run by John Zawislak and Joey Power, coupled with Alex Fink and Anthony Bamford going 5-6, carried the day for the Rams in their PAC Liberty Division meet with the Vikings.

Tyler Clifford gave PV individual race honors with a 16:01 run on his home course. Zawislak followed in 16:11, with Power checking in at 16:32. POTTSGROVE 18, PHOENIXVIL­LE 47 » Simon Keen and Brandon Henriksen provided a 1-2 finish that keyed the Falcons’ victory over the Phantoms in their PAC Frontier Division meet.

Keen covered his home course in a winning time of 18:17, Henriksen three seconds back (18:20) in second place. Connor Wilchusky gave Phoenixvil­le a third-place (18;25) showing.

UPPER PERKIOMEN 15, POTTSTOWN 50 » The Indians came close to sweeping the top 10 spots in the finishing order in their PAC Frontier Division meet with the Trojans.

Jamie Sharp was Pottstown’s lone Top 10 performer, placing eighth. The rest of the order was UP’s, headed by Gabe Pitcher’s winning 17:39 run.

Girls cross country

SPRING-FORD 27, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 28 » One second made the difference for the Rams as they edged the Vikings in a PAC Liberty Division meet.

Nora Albertson took ninth place in a time of 20:58, edging PV’s Emma Alexy (20:59).

Delaney O’Sullivan claimed individual race honors for the Vikes, covering her home course in 19:11 to beat out SpringFord’s Emily Smith (19:19). POTTSGROVE 19, PHOENIXVIL­LE 37 » Naomi Hillen blew the field away with her winning run for the Falcons in their PAC Frontier Division meet with the Phantoms.

Hillen covered her home course in 21:12, beating out teammate Calista Faust (22:59) by more than 1-3/4 minutes. Madison O’Neil was Phoenixvil­le’s top finisher, placing fourth in 23:43.

UPPER PERKIOMEN 24, POTTSTOWN 31 » Serena Detweiler was the runaway winner of the Indians’ PAC Frontier Division meet with the Trojans.

Detweiler’s winning time of 22:27 on her home course was 2-1/2 minutes faster than the rest of the field. Teammate Alexa Banner crossed the finish line in 24:57, and Adrianna Hayward was Pottstown’s top runner in third (25:23).

Field hockey

TULPEHOCKE­N 3, DANIEL BOONE 2 » Rachel Howe scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lift the Trojans over the Blazers in a pairing of Berks Conference member schools.

Kiley Marone added a goal and two assists for Tulpehocke­n. Haley Engle and Mackenzie Ring scored for Boone. POTTSGROVE 2, KUTZTOWN 1» Kathryn Henriksen and Riley Simon both scored for the Falcons in their nonconfere­nce win over the Cougars.

Amanda Stone came away with one save in the cage, though Brittany Noecker notched a goal for Kutztown. OLEY VALLEY 9, BOYERTOWN 0» The Bears were blanked by the Lynx in this non-conference matchup.

Boyertown keeper Laura Wigand made 17 saves in the cage.

BOYERTOWN 3, PHOENIXVIL­LE 0 » The Bears swept the Phantoms on Senior Night by set scores of 2514, 25-15 and 25-13.

Emily Wolfe had seven digs and six kills while Julia Smith posted 15 digs. Taylor Jones added 18 assists, eight aces, seven kills and five digs while Emma Ludwig had 15 assists, seven digs, 13 kills and six aces. SPRING-FORD 3, OWEN J. ROBERTS 0 » The Rams swept their PAC match with the Wildcats by set scores of 2512, 25-22 and 25-16.

Top players for SpringFord were Olivia Olsen with 16 kills and seven digs, Grace Kraft with 32 digs and Lauren Beppel with 14 assists. Statistica­l stars for OJR were Michelle Frank (two kills, seven assists, eight digs), Mikayla Johnson (five kills, one assist, one block, three digs) and Gabi Tamburro (four kills, three blocks, four digs). POPE JOHN PAUL II 3, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2 » The Golden Panthers were extended to the limit by the Vikings before coming out on top in this PAC game. Set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 2426 and 15-11.

Leading the way for PV was Sarah Straub (12 kills, two aces, seven blocks), Grace Herbein (six kills, 28 assists, 10 digs) and Liz Caruso (23 digs).
