Hylton, Barnhill apply for board vacancy
POTTSTOWN >> The choice for new school board member will be pretty straight forward.
John Armato, the Pottstown School District’s director of community relations and a member of the board, confirmed Tuesday that only two people had applied to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Emanuel Wilkerson.
The two applicants are Thomas Hylton and William Barnhill.
Hylton is a former board member who served two terms, ran unsuccessfully for a third and applied, but was not chosen, to fill a vacancy in April when Ron Williams resigned.
Barnhill also ran unsuccessfully for an open board seat last year. His wife, Bonita Barnhill, did secure a seat on the board in that same election.
Wilkerson announced his resignation in August but it did not become effective until Oct. 1.
At the Sept. 20 board meeting, the board voted to accept Wilkerson’s resignation.
The person chosen to replace him will serve until December 2019, and must then run for a full fouryear term if he wishes to remain on the school board.
Both Hylton and Barnhill will be interviewed publicly on Thursday, Oct. 25.
However, as it stands now, board members will not vote on Wilkerson’s replacement until the next scheduled meeting on Nov. 15.
And it is not yet clear whether the lucky new board member will even be sworn in that night based on the discussions at the Sept. 20 meeting.
