Methacton, Perk Valley field hockey advance

It certainly shook up the bracket.

Methacton’s field hockey team, a 14th seed in the District 1 Class AAA playoffs, squared off against third-seeded Haverford Wednesday. Facing a win-or-go-home situation in the second round, the Warriors extended their season with a 2-1 victory over the Fords.

Reilly Smith and Alexa Kratz scored goals in each quarter for Methacton (13-7), with Jayme Weber getting credit for an assist. Molly Frey helped secure the upset victory with seven-save goaltendin­g, Ellie Kent the lone Haverford player to dent the net.

Methacton, which visits sixthseede­d Downingtow­n West Friday, weathered the Fords’ 7-1 edge in corner shots. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 7, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2 >> The Vikings came out steaming in their District One Class 3A playoff second round game against the Golden Hawks, their first game since suffering their first loss of the season in last week’s Pioneer Athletic Conference championsh­ip game.

Kelly Baitinger scored 1:08 into regulation and had a hand in No. 2 PV’s first four goals. For the game, she finished with three goals and an assist while Danielle Hamm added a score and two assists in the win. Teresa Bartkowski had a goal and an assist while Olivia Keyte and Katie Wuerstle were each credited with solo tallies in the win. Gabby Martina had an assist.

Bridget Doherty and Katelyn Cocco each scored for No. 18 C.R.

South in the loss.

With the result, Perk Valley advances to the quarterfin­al round of the district playoffs and will face Downingtow­n East — a 1-0 winner over Conestoga — on Friday.

Girls tennis

DISTRICT 1 >> Methacton’s Dina Nouaime and Tina Prince were shut out of their bid to win the District’s Class AAA championsh­ip by Harriton’s Sophia Sassoli and Saige Roshkoff during the Doubles Tournament’s final at Legacy.

Sassoli/Roshkoff swept their duel with Nouaime/ Prince 6-0, 6-0. Nouaime and Prince, however, will be part of the district’s contingent competing in the PIAA tournament being held in Hershey Nov. 2-3, the top four singles and doubles finishers qualifying.

Nouaime/Prince, the district’s sixth seed, won four previous matches to qualify for the championsh­ip. Following a three-set win over first-round opponent Jenny Landells/Julia Fridenberg of Wissahicko­n, they took their next three in two-set verdicts. GERMANTOWN FRIENDS 4, HILL SCHOOL 1 >> Elenz Zhang got the Blues’ lone point in their non-league loss to Germantown Friends.

Zhang was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at first singles for the Hill.

Boys soccer

PHOENIXVIL­LE 2, LOWER MORELAND 1, 2OT >> Jake Perillo scored the game-winner as the No. 5 seed Phantoms dropped No. 4 Lower Moreland in a District 1 Class 3A first round game.

Doug Smith assisted Perillo’s winner. Perillo scored Phoenixvil­le’s goal in regulation as well. Gavin Perillo had five saves in goal.

Phoenixvil­le advances to meet No. 1 Holy Ghost Prep — a 5-1 winner over Bishop Shanahan Wednesday — on Monday, Oct. 29. HILL SCHOOL 6, GERMANTOWN FRIENDS 0 >> In a nonleague match pre-determined to feature youngsters vs. youngsters, the Blues rolled up a victory over host Germantown Friends School.

Kyle Sullivan posted a hat trick, scoring in the third, 38th and 70th minutes. Noah Toole scored in the second half, Barrett brothers Jake and Zach each had a goal and assist, and Josh Shepherd was credited with two assists while Blake Groff posted a clean sheet in goal.

HILL SCHOOL 1, SHIPLEY 0 >> Emily Dunn buried the rebound of a Sadie McCaleb free kick to provide all the offense the Blues would need in a non-league victory over Shipley School.

Midway through the second half, Hill drew a free kick from 30 yards out. McCaleb took the free kick, with her shot hitting the post and bouncing back into the six yard box, where Dunn pounced on the loose ball and scored. From there, Hill buckled down defensivel­y to see out the win, with goalkeeper Marah Krick stopping all three shots she faced to secure the clean sheet.

POPE JOHN PAUL II 3, PHOENIXVIL­LE 0 >> The Golden Panthers opened play in the District 1-3A playoffs by sweeping the Phantoms. Second-seeded PJP won the pairing of Pioneer Athletic Conference programs by set scores of 27-25, 25-16 and 25-20.

The seventh-seeded Phantoms’ statistica­l leaders were Keara Hennessey (one ace, 16 assists, 11 digs), Kayla Grammersto­rf (three aces, seven kills, 10 digs) and Romina Broglia (one ace, five kills, 12 digs). PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 3, AC. OF NEW CHURCH 0 >> The Panthers swept past Academy of the New Church to win the Tri-County League championsh­ip.

Set scores in the match at Collegium Charter were 258, 25-18 and 25-15.

Boys golf

HILL SCHOOL 203, SPRINGSIDE-CHESTNUT HILL 217 >> The Blues concluded the regular season with a victory over Springside-Chestnut Hill at Brookside Country Club.

The Blues were looking to extend their winning streak and needed strong play from all team members to do so. Echo Wu was again low man for Hill at 38, with Cam Miller only one shot behind at 39. Nick Lu also played well with a 40.

Boys water polo

HILL SCHOOL 13, GERMANTOWN AC. 6 >> Germantown Academy scored on their first possession, but the Blues answered with backto-back strikes from Alfonso Mestre and Michael Schiavone en route to the non-league victory.

Tiernan Brunner had four goals and four steals for the Hill, with John Nelligan also hitting the nets four times. Schiavone netted a pair to go with two assists and five steals, and Patrick Dunn, Yeob Kim and Mestre (four assists, four steals) each scored once.

Girls water polo

HILL SCHOOL 11, GERMANTOWN AC. 8 >> Maddie Green and Anna Bautista each netted hat tricks to key the Blues’ non-league victory over Germantown Academy.

Claire Alfano and Alex Zelinski had pairs of goals for the Hill, with Kamilia Barkasi completing the offensive output. Bautista was credited with five steals, Alfano and Anna Schlegel with four assists apiece and Lauren Mitchell and Megan Mikuen each with four saves in goal.
