Methacton field hockey wins state playoff opener

The Methacton field hockey team opened up its run at states with a 3-0 win over Delaware Valley during the first round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs on Tuesday night at Wallenpaup­ack Area High School.

The Warriors (16-8 overall) scored all three of their goals during the second half. Katy Benton scored twice while Frankie Lucchesi had a goal and Rachel Alderfer added an assist. Molly Frey came away with three saves in goal for the shutout win while Del Val keeper Emily Festa made eight saves.

With the result, Methacton will face Lower Dauphin, a 2-0 winner over Souderton, in the state quarterfin­al round Saturday at a site and time to be determined. HILL SCHOOL 2, AGNES IRWIN 1 >> The Blues opened up their PA Independen­t Schools Athletic As-

ciation (PAISAA) playoff run with a win over Agnes Irwin in the quarterfin­al round.

Trailing by a goal at the half, Alex Conway pushed the ball into the back of the net in the first minute of the second half to even up the game. Less than four minutes later, Madison Orsi fired a rocket from the top of the circle into the base board off an inset from Conway to give Hill (14-3-1 overall) a 2-1 lead.

Hill School will take on Germantown Academy today in the PAISAA semifinal. The winner will advance to the championsh­ip game to play either Episcopal Academy of Academy of Notre Dame on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Bryn Mawr College.

Boys soccer

HILL SCHOOL 3, PENN CHARTER 0 >> Three different scorers helped the Blues past Penn Charter and into the PAISAA semifinals at the Proving Grounds.

Aidan Sullivan opened the scoring by finishing a corner kick from Sam Beckett in the seventh minute.

The match stayed there through intermissi­on before Zach Barrett doubled Hill’s lead in the 67th minute. Hale Lombard converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to close out the scoring while Alan Kim made three saves in goal.

Hill School will face Mercersbur­g in the semifinal round at a date and site to be determined.
