Pine Forge wins opener at regionals

The Pine Forge Senior Babe Ruth team won its opening-round game of the Mid-Atlantic Tournament against Frederick County, Md., 10-0 in six innings Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y.

Pine Forge shut out the Maryland team with a great pitching performanc­e by Drew Hartman, who allowed two hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

Ryan Schwab finished things up on the mound in the sixth by having Maryland go in order with two strikeouts.

Zane Alderfer had the hot bat of the day with three hits. Pine Forge’s defense was outstandin­g during the game.

Pine Forge will play Jamestown, N.Y. Monday in Syracuse.

The teams in the Mid Atlantic Tournament consist of: Onondaga, N.Y., Northern Del., Jamestown, N.Y.; Lackawanna, Pa.; Pine Forge; Frederick County, Md.; Prince George County, Md.;

Chester County, Pa.; South Colonie, N.Y.

The winner of the Mid Atlantic Tournament, which goes through Thursday July 18, will advance to the Sr. Babe Ruth World Series in Mobile, Ala., Aug. 2-9.

Junior Legion

The Bear Cubs captured the Berks County playoff championsh­ip on Saturday.

Jonathon Myers had two hits and two RBI while Brandon Shane added a double and RBI to fuel the Boyertown offense. Ryan Willing earned the win, while Cole Galloway picked up the save.

The Bear Cubs went 15-1 in the Berks League and improved to 30-2-1 overall.

The Bear Cubs will open their Junior Legion Eastern Regionals in Scranton on Saturday, July 20 at 9 a.m. against the Lebanon Valley League champion.
