Grizzlies get regional win behind Rothermel, Ferraro

The Boyertown Grizzlies got solid pitching from two hurlers Sunday as it edged Roslyn, 2-1, in a losers’ bracket game from the Pa. Junior American Legion Berwick Regional Tournament.

Boyertown’s mound duo — Zach Rothermel to start, Ethan Ferraro at the end — limited Roslyn to three hits on the day. Ferraro got the win off three innings of one-hit shutout relief, after Rothermel scattered a pair of hits and struck out three through the first four.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Rothermel led off the inning with a bloop to second, Evan Swoyer coming on as a pinch-runner.

Following walks to the next two Grizzly batters, Cole Kratz came to the plate and roped a line drive over the left fielder’s head on the first pitch to score Swoyer from third and get the walk-off win.

Ferraro went 2-for-3 at the plate and Rothermel reached base on all three plate appearance­s with two hits and a walk. NORTH PARKLAND 5, BOYERTOWN GRIZZLIES 1 >> Ryan Young drove in the Grizzlies’ lone run as they fell to North Parkland in the opening round of the Berwick Regional Saturday.

Eric Keebler got the start and loss for Boyertown, touched for two runs and two walks in one inning’s work. Ethan Ferraro and Cole Kratz came in in relief for the Grizzlies, who play the loser of Saturday’s first-rounder between Berwick and Roslyn. BOYERTOWN BEAR-CUBS 10, FREDERICKS­BURG 0 >> Ryan Willing threw four shutout innings Saturday, and Nathan Fox a fifth, to key the Bear Cubs’ 10-0 win over Fredericks­burg to open the Pa. Junior American Legion Tournament at South Scranton.

Brandon Shane has two hits for Boyertown, which played Tyrone Sunday.
