Malvern woman announces candidacy for 167th District
MALVERN >> A Malvern woman who serves at Malvern’s Republican Comittee-woman and who wants to give middle-class people representation in Harrisburg, has announced her candidacy for the 167th state Legislative District.
Gail Newmann will address a group of supporters on Saturday, June 29, at 4:30 p.m. in front of Malvern Borough Hall.
Newman is hoping to unseat Kristine Howard, a Democrat, who defeated Republican Duane Milne last year for the state House seat. Milne had held the seat since 2010 but was swept out of office, along with many other Republicans, following, a Democratic surge.
“I feel that I am a worker candidate,” Newmann said. “My emphasis will be on people like myself — middle-class private sector people who need a voice.”
Newmann has a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master of business degree from Temple University. She had previously served on the Malvern Communication Committee.
Newmann said she will be a common sense advocate for government transparency. She has spent most of her life as a small businessperson and health care worker in the private sector.
“It’s very important that we find a common ground,” she said. “I don’t mind paying taxes, but I don’t want that money spent recklessly.”
Newmann said she advocates a work requirement for Welfare, but wants to ensure those who truly need help get it.
“I have empathy, and there needs to be a safety net for our disabled and autistic,” she said.
Newman said those employees who belong to unions should be able to have a say whether or not they should be forced to pay union dues.
A state legislator’s salary is $87,180, per year, and includes a per diem of $183 per day.
The 167th District includes Charlestown Township, Easttown, East Whiteland, West Whiteland, West Pikeland, Malvern Borough and Willistown Township.
